You can kill anything with a sharp stick. Might not live to tell about it though. The 35 rem beats the stick but if a pissed off grizzly was running my way I'm thinking I'd want something bigger. I don't run that fast anymore
Then I guess a 30/30 woldn't do then? You can kill anything with a sharp stick. Might not live to tell about it though. The 35 rem beats the stick but if a pissed off grizzly was running my way I'm thinking I'd want something bigger. I don't run that fast anymore

I'm intrigued by this fat little cartridge, never owned one, and your thread has me digging at it. I like moderate cartridges with a heavy bullet for youth and ladies more than the .243 angle, and this looks interesting. I wonder what speed it could move a 250gr at from a strong bolt action.

I would think it is safe to assume 25-2800fps with 250gr. I'm pushing 2000fps with a 405gr in a 45/70 and my lever and the single didn't drop any screws yet.Think of 300 Win Mag loads,if you have a strong bolt action.
What the heck!?!?!
The stiffest load Hodgdon publishes is 2010 fps with a 220 grain... how are you going to get 2800 fps with a 250 grain bullet??? That's 4300 ft/lb's!!! My best .35R load was exactly half of that...
I don't own a 35, that's why I said ASSUME, based on bullet weight and what could be done with a strong bolt action. Not any bolt action. My 45/70 load would blow up most of the rifles that were desgined for the caliber when it came out back then.
I had no intention to lead on the wrong track here, sorry about that.
I have owned, loaded for, and shot several 358 Norma Magnums over the past fifty years, and maximum loads will reach a bit over 2800 fps with 250 gr bullets.
Have also loaded the 220 gr Speers to 2200 in the 35 Rem in the Marlin rifles.
My guess is that a 250 gr, which is almost 15% heavier, could be loaded somewhere around 1900 fps.
The bigger problem would be how those bullets would expand at that velocity.

I was thinking cast 250gr, so 1800-1900 would be lovely and near max. Could make a nice moderate little carbine that penetrates.
Hoyt: When you rechambered your 35's to 358's, what type of rifle did you do that with? This interests me.![]()
