.338 Barrel, what do I need ?

I went with a 30 inch straight taper. Holland radial discharge brake. Yes I had to buy a special drag bag to fit it but it's my baby.

Well, I think I am gonna give Jerry the nod on a pre-fit.

Not 100% decided on options, but it will be a longer and heavier barrel.

Wonder how heavy will the Shilen pre-fits come?

I don't know as I've never ordered one but I'm sure Jerry can probably get you whatever you want minus maybe odd stuff.

I really hope this new barrel works out for you. Being as we're not all that far from each other, maybe someday we can shoot together with the 338's booming away!

Hey Kelly
You may wanna read following about twist rate (page 7 to 17)

http://appliedballisticsllc.com/Articles/MAiLRS_preview.pdf

10 twist should do just fine but 9 won't hurt either.

As for barrel length, just my opinion, 28" is practice limit. Also longer thicker barrel means lot of weight. Savage action is not as strong as custom actions so heavier free floating barrel will put lot of stress on the action. Unless you wanna put barrel block like Jerry did on his 6.5 mystic I suggest stay between 26-28".

This is just my opinion, just like thousands others that you find on the internet. Do your own research.

Tell me about your set up, and how it works for you.

I am curious.

I have a 2ft x 2ft and two 1ft x 1ft AR400 plates that need lead marks on em and I need a barrel. :)

Are you for real? Does anybody can produce say 1-9.295" twist?
Do you know that during (especialy) button rifling the twist might oscyllate 1/4" from one end to the other?

yes for real. It is the reason companies like kreger MAKE those twist rates. yes twist rates vary in button barrels which is one reason why I never use them.

Stiller Tac338 left hand single shot with 20MOA rail.
30 inch Rock Creek 9.7 twist (I believe) with a straight taper.
Holland Radial brake.
Manners T4-A stock.
Jewel trigger.

Works very well other than I do need to have the throat cut longer. Have tried at my local 'smith but the barrel is on so tight that he is not willing to risk damaging anything by applying more force. I will have to try and find someone who can do it without removing the action.

I just had built a 223AI on a Savage 11 action with a 30 inch straight taper barrel and at no time did the gunsmith ever say the action would be stressed by the weight.

Let me correct myself, I guess not 'lot of stress' , but heavy barrel will put some stress on the action(which can be managed to some degree with proper bedding).
I'm not an expert so please don't listen to me, I just had an opinion that I couldn't hold back :D

No problem, I can just shoot into space, no shear forces on the barrel/action when it is aiming strait up :)

Think I will go on the heavy side for the barrel.

Ya mean like like this?:D This one's been violated by Shooter's .338, a .338 Edge, my .284, & my .260. Currently sitting at 1203 yards and will be going further after harvest takes the crop off from around it. Lots of room on it for you too, Kelly! This one's 21" square AR-400. All hits on the frame are Shooter's:evil:

We have some pretty tough spotters out there, though.

Rooster

I am impressed with those hits on the frame, gotta be tough to do two in a row. ;)

Just getting the final details figured with Jerry.

Will be a fatty so, I will likely need a different brake.

What else is everyone using out there?

Talk to rich @ spartan , he custom made my brakes for my 1.25" barrels . If you're lucky he saved the CAD file and can easily make another . I have an ongoing thread in here about all the nonsense I get up to there is a vid showing the brake , though on a 308 , it reduces the recoil to almost nil

Edit :

Here it is

Rooster,
I think it was the guy on the 6.5 CreedMoor that was smacking the pipes! :p

We do owe you some stands though.

Really looking forward to fall when we can really stretch them out! We're gonna need your professional spotters though. Was tough to see any of the misses even at 1204 yards!

Ok, have a pre-fit BULL barrel from Shilen going to be coming, Jerry has said that he can use the Savage brake and it will fit nicely on the barrel after some small adjustments.

Glad he is around to lend advice.

Now, get ready for spring time. :)
