AS already mentioned, with the SL-8 they decided to use a heavy barrel profile ..much heavier than the G-36 and apparently heavier than the MG36 LMG . Just measured a spare SL-8 barrel and its about .850 at chamber end tapering to .780 at muzzel

Its not the fact that the rifle is heavy, its the balance is not ideal since it's front heavy .

To make it worst, when you do a G-36 style conversion , the easiest ( bolt together vs the TBostic or Choptix kid conversion where they plastic weld G36 rear receiver ) is the HDPS stock block adapter. Even with the shorter G36C stock, the LOP is noticeably longer . The now exacerbates the front heavy balance

The LOP is so freaking long now that if you are use to shooting an AR with nose to charging handle you will hate the HDPS setup . LOP is so long I can't use any ACOG ...even the long eye relief TA-11

I personally didn't care since the only reason I have this is to have NR for shooting gophers in Alberta where its on a bipod anyways !

I have shorty AR's that are as heavy with all the crap I hang off it, but balance far far better.

To reiterate , its not the overall weight so much as the balance. My heaviest rifle is a 20" barrel AIAE in 308 . It's actually heavier than my TRG-42 in 338 Lapua with a 26" barrel . Despite the higher weight, the AI is noticably easier to shoot offhand

Every single person who has held my SL-8 with G-36 stock conversion comments on the front heaviness

IF they ever import the HK 293 so you don't have to mess with the stock conversion that would be the way to go over messing around with stock adapter

I found it balanced better than the old versions of the XCR and there is no shortage of people who say the weight isn't a problem on that platform even with it costing more and accuracy is not up to par.
 
The sl8 is not a rifle to be carried around in the bush or field it is made to be used prone with a bipod. If you want something to carry look elsewhere. I'm glad you all like lugging around your sl8 and spending money on a g36 conversion that is nowhere near as ergonomic as a real g36. And for the record I have spent plenty of time on sl8 and g36 conversions AND a real g36 and g36c

so since weight and balance are similar to the xcr would you apply that thinking to that rifle as well?

I was talking more about the buttstock or rear of the rifle. And XCR railed handguard is just like any ar15 rail handguard. So your saying Ar15 with quad rail are bulky?

I do not like quad rails at all, I find them more "bulky" than a smooth handguard of similar diameter to use, the feel is just all wrong to me and I have yet to see a real need for a full length quad rail on a rifle in civilian hands.

I'm not sure what this has to do with the weight and balance being similar between the two rifles like I originally posted?

Turning down an SL-8 barrel to G36 profile is an option for those that have them. It is night and day difference....
 
I picked up an SL8 a frew months ago and thought I would be doing the G36 stock conversion, but frankly, I'm getting used to and liking the thumbhole just fine. Have installed the Spuhr magwell so I can use all the LAR pistol mags I have and they work just fine. Yes, I use it at the range for the most part, but given I'm 6' and, well, let's say I'm "big boned" I don't see why it would be that hard to hump it with a decent three point sling. Shoots quite well with that nice heavy profile barrel. The full rail is nice, have a Leupold VX-3 4.5-14 on it and it just works. With a good hand lod I can get MOA groups with a bipod and rear bag. What's not to like? Would I want to be running and jumping and rolling around in the dirt with it, well, no, but walking in the woods prolly not gonna kill me for the little bit of extra weight (versus what? a logn heavy barrel bolt gun? some other NR semi?)
 
In my case I was looking for the most accurate NR 223 semi auto I could find. True this rifle is the heaviest, but for me that was the sacrifice I was willing to make for accuracy. It is hands down the most accurate NR semi you can buy in 223. With hand loads I am shooting consist MOA. I thank hoggie and cr5 for their efforts to get me there. Good CGN members they are.
