I think depending on your starting pointing. If never shoot a gun before, .22 is good start, cheap and easier to handle to build the foundation.
after a while, or if you have shot guns on and off before, it's a good choice between glock 9mm or M&P 9mm for cheap. Then, you may also think about P226 given the different factory conversion kits that allow you to have different calibers for cheap. I am eyeing on the P226 TAGOPS. It comes with fiber optic/night sight combo, SRT and 4 Mags.
Ive shot a few guns before and I have liked the way the Glock felt and shot. Also to own a Colt or Wilson Combat is to own 2 of the best 1911's out there and the customization you can do with them is amazing. Even some of the customization you can do with the Glock is also amazing.
