CCI "ammo availability" topic revisited

CCI hit the nail on the head, there is a shortage as people are buying……. and some are hoarding…

The current U.S. administration has scared many new gun buyers into buying guns The actual number of gun owners in the U.S. has jumped in the last two years. Prior to that all the ammo makers were moving along at a good rate and supply was meeting demand. Obama scared all the existing gun owners so they went out and started buying more ammo and hoarding it, on top of that the new gun owners jumped into the fray and started buying and hoarding also. The demand for ammo in the U.S. has nearly quadrupled. Because it costs so much to tool up to make new ammo, nobody is adding new supply lines, they are simply running the existing lines 24/7 and even at that pace they cannot keep up with current demand, regardless of what is driving demand. Its going to take a long time before supply and demand balance out to what it used to be. I don't think we will see the days where you can walk into your lgs and see pallets of 22 ammo on sale by the front door during varmint season…. those days may be gone for good. I hope not, but may be.

don't hate on me for buying a case of ammo. they sell it so I bought it

when I'm looking for it, there's never any around. it comes in waves so you'd be smart to stock up on it when you can. I'm not the one standing in line at 6 am at Walmart so I can buy all the ammo as it comes of the crate so nobody else can have any.

I'm not the one selling it online for more than I paid for it. I use it. I shoot a lot. also I don't see the price of it getting any cheaper

everyone else has the same opportunity to buy it. it's your own choice. if you don't want so much then just buy a box and let the next guy have some too. all the more power to you

at least we have .22 ammo here to buy....in the US there's none to be had anywhere

I was at Cabelas in Buffalo yesterday. They were completely sold out of .22 and the sign said "Limit of 1 large box or 2 small boxes". So even when they try to ration the supply, they can't. The next time I find Blazers anywhere, I'm buying 10k of them...

You don't owe an explanation to anyone. If you can afford it, buy it and shoot it.
Let them cry over the "shortage"

Picked up a case of CCI from Cabelas, sales guy try to stop me from buying the whole case he said you can't buy the whole lot, I asked why not my money not good enough and besides you don't have a sign that limits sales. In any case from that 1 case that I bought there is half case left.

what kind of CCI did they have ? Mini Mags ?

I just got off the phone with my Shooting Sports place and pretty much all CCI is expected to be out of stock for a year. I have part of a brick of .22lr velocitor and about 20 rounds of .17HMR left and thats it for the small game season apparently.. WTH.... In desperate need of a brick of .17hmr 20g FMJ only ammo that doesn't destroy the animal for the table... Anyone sees some pm me.

The manufacturers are slow to react because the demand is not necessarily real nor sustainable. In a perceived allocation market, people start to hoard which theoretically is only a blip in demand. It's a self fulfilling prophecy because people buy anything they can in a few months that they might typically buy over a year or two. The same people see further shortages as they try to buy more and get more aggressive at buying whatever they can find. The manufactures just try to ride it out and increase short term capacity without having to invest heavily. If the demand keeps up after a couple of years, they may adjust long term capacity. If all the hoarders are satisfied tomorrow that there is lots of sustainable inventory in the market, the demand drops significantly and that's why the manufacturers are cautious.

Is there a shortage of CCI? Yes.
Impossible to find? No.
I put this little pile together throughout the last 2 months.

I cant find CCI .22lr anywhere locally. This has been the case for some time now..the hoarding not so bad last summer though, i could still find stingers pretty cheap, CCI standards, quiets, mini mags...but now...the shelves are all empty and the prices are high. Yesterday, i bought a few small 50 boxes of rem subsonics for 6.99 each!! Ridiculous. The hoarding has reached this area unfortunately, the local CT had 16 boxes of fed bulks, i never got there on time, a week later, they where all gone. There is a place that sells cb’s but at 13-14$ a box of 100’s...for cb’s...yeah right..stick them you know where. I know where to get some blazers but the guys leave them off the shelf, you have to know people...man it’s crazy.

When will things go back to normal...quick math....22lr production is 4.2 billion rounds a year...but there are aprox 50 million households in the usa that own guns...if 10% hoard...that’s 5 million people hoarding (conservatively omitting the rest of the world)...if they want to stock up to 20 k rounds (average amount some want way more) thats 100 billion rounds (excluding normal consumption) so how many years will it take to satisfy those hoarders? 100/4.2 = 24 years....minimum.

There are several factors that could be studied further i.e the 5 million hoarders...but conservatively omitting the very significant normal .22lr consumption and the rest of the world’s hoarding should easily compensate any discrepancy in fact i believe the estimation is quite conservative.

This is the reason I will not purchase any .22LR guns. Not just because of the CCI shortage, but because LR is so hard to find consistently. I'm glad I have a .22WMR rifle. Easy to find lots of CCI and other quality ammo.
