I don't believe that the grizzly is "endangered".
Maybe if there was a season, it would cut down on encounters. Maybe not.

Sorry for the loss, and yes open a season and the bears will be fast to learn how to behave with humans: they re fast learners.

Very sad outcome. Always unfortunate when these types of things happen, I truly hope they do not make the situation worse and destroy the bear for doing what is natural to it.

I was talking to a Environment Officer yesterday and he told me that there was a live round in the chamber of the rifle with an indentation on the primer and the firing pin was in the fired possition. In addition there was hair on/in the muzzel of the rifle. I don't know how reliable this information is.

Let's just say, if I was wandering around that area in the next little while and had an encounter with a Grizzly, I wouldn't care if it was the same one or not, I'd be more inclined to reach for the rifle than the bear spray for safety sake. One of those little side effects of letting this one live.
