I recently bought a Browning BAR Shotrac Hog Hunter in .308 was surprised to see it produce a 1MOA-ish group of Federal soft point (no idea idea what the bullet weight was) during my barrel break in.

I bought the rifle mostly for hunting but part of me wants to try and do some precision SAPR-style shooting with it. So, my question is: are there any good do it all .308 bullets out there?

I don't really want to have to work up two loads, one for paper punching and one for hunting if I don't have to. I really don't want to use the ridiculously expensive Nosler partition bullets I have on hand for paper punching. AMAX are accurate, relatively plentiful and cheap-ish, would they take out a deer / bear / moose?

I've spent almost all of my loading time doing precision shooting with my .223s so I'm not as familiar with the .308 options.

Thanks in advance!

I've heard many people say AMAX bullets are meant for hunting but Hornady calls them target bullets. They aren't bonded so can break up pretty quick. For something like deer they would be okay in a pinch if you had nothing else but anything heavier, most would say no.

Hornady SST's are polymer tipped, mechanically bonded bullets meant for hunting and run about the same price as AMAX's. There are quite a few anecdotes out there about them not performing on game and I haven't used them myself on anything but paper.
Hornady interlocks are your regular soft point hunting bullets but can shoot fairly accurately and aren't too expensive.

Sierra Game Kings. I've had rifles that shot them as well as match bullets, but they're a hunting bullet and designed as such.

Nosler Accubonds are good in this regard as well, but more expensive.

I've been using 150gr barnes ttsx with 44gr of h4895, it's my goto round for hunting, get velocity of around 2825. For target shooting I've been using 155gr berger vlds with 41gr of h4895 and a velocity of 2575 but a 5 group with only 4 holes.

Amax bullets are what Hornady loads in most .308 TAP ammo. Those rounds are designed to expand rapidly and deter over penetration. Not a hunting bullet, just google "Amax deer"... They also have a very consistent jacket and are great accuracy proven bullets. IMHO you are best off with a couple loads.

Thanks folks. Those Sierras might be something to check out. Anyone know of any hunting and target .308 bullets that share the same weight and BC? I wonder how similarly they might perform.

Hornady SST's in 150 or 165g. Good ballistic co-efficient for LR, designed for terminal performance for hunting too.

I would use the 168 btip for a do everything in a 308. It will do the exact same thing as an accubond at 308 speeds and it's cheaper.

Anybody know where to find any of the mentioned bullets in bulk packs of 500 or 1000? I hate working up a load, then running out of bullets, and finding the local store shelves are all out.

Typically only the "match" bullets are sold in large bulk packs. Such match bullets are not normally good choices for hunting.

The one exception are the bulk softpoints by Winchester and Remington when you can find them.
(But those are poorer choices for longer range usage - reduced ballistic coefficient).
The projectile marketplace has been distorted for the last couple of years by mega-demand.

Exactly why I was hoping that something frequently available to me, such as the AMAX, would fit the bill.

165 gr Sierra GK hollow point or SP.. both produce well under 3/4" in groups in my dads .308. Same POI between the 2.. dad got 2 white tail last year with them. I was impressed with there preformance. the doe was running at him.. hit her on the left side of the chest and the bullet exit the right side just infront of the rear leg.. pulled the intestines out on its way. He will be using those for moose this year even thoguh i did load up some Interbonds for him.. could not get accuracy that great with them.. 1.5" at 100... This moose season will be the telling tale of how good the bullets are..

My load for the 165gr sierra are 42.5 gr Benchmark inside a remington case set off by a CCI BR2 primer. good mild recoil and hits game like a sledge hammer.

Work up a load using 165 grain hunting bullets and IMR4064. A-Max bullets are not made for hunting anything but varmints.
