M1A Precision Challenge 1.5 MOA

:D Good Job all of you! :D

I'm really enjoying reading your posts and your results... Holy Poop! 21 pages and counting!

I truly love them pics of the painted / crayoned/ grease penciled/ WhiteOut 'ed receivers! Keep them pictures coming!

Now just some historical context.... around 1994 and 1995, the USMC Teams were still using the M14 accurized rigs at Camp Perry. All that time the US AMTU were shooting highly modified M16A2 rifles for the National Matches every July. The US Army handed the Marines their most embarrassing losses for 2 years in a row. In 1995 the teams using M16A2's eclipsed the M14 teams by 200 points!

This is all from "Black Magic: The Mouse that Roared" by John Feamster, 1997

In this book, the author describes his transition from an M14 to an AR15 to an AR15A2 Hbar.

Around 1990, I began the move towards an HBAR AR15A2 and my NRA High Power coach was appalled. Would my #### fall off? I have to honor him so I ain't making fun of his attitude (back then). I moved to Simcoe County in 1991 and with my HBAR, began competing in ORA Service Rifle matches and said goodbye to my beloved NRA High Power matches.

Last contact I had with my coach years ago, he sold his M1A's and began shooting a mouse gun in Camp Perry, Ohio. Now I'm shooting BOTH AR and M1A (too expensive to feed for competition courses of fire.).

Cheers and keep helping and encouraging them noooobies here!

Well, I failed a 1.5 MOA challenge today, but I had a great time doing it ;)

Spent the day out with the Twisted Roosters shooting club and had a chance to shoot out to 1050 yards for the first time. Naturally I brought my scoped M305.

Here's the view from the firing line, the red arrow is pointing to the silhouette gong at 1050 (I think, it's hard to see)...

There were paper targets at 100 and 200, and gongs at 260, 400, 490, 618, 770 and 1050. The wind was about 20kph and at the firing line it would alternate from directly behind us to over our right shoulders at about 45 degrees, but the flag at the 1050 mark was almost always straight out to the left. It was about 27 above, with humidity at around 50%. I brought along 50 rounds of Federal 175gr GMM and a bunch of Norc copper-washed stuff for plinking. Most of my GMM went to the 260 and 618 yard gongs and trying to dial in my scope for 1050 yards, but I was able to save 10 shots at the end for a concerted try at a "mini-challenge."

Here's the platform we were shooting from...

Here's the silhouette gong at 1050 after 10 shots, my meagre hits are circled in red. I know the bottom one's a glancer, but I'm still counting it, lol (the other hit on the lower left was from another string)...

The gong was about 22" across, so about 2 MOA or so at 1050 yards, here's my mitt for scale...

All in all, a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Looking forward to trying to raise that hit rate next time ;)

Club swag...

Actually, that's backwards; you want to loosen the front screw and tighten the back. That would give you a down-angled scope which would make you hit high. Can't wait to try my aluminum one.

Tony.

Just a heads up wen installing the casm aluminum mount; if I remember correctly you need to tighten the rear screw as much as possible then once you make contact on the front screw go a 1/4 turn or something like that as per the instructions if I am not mistaken?

Well I had a problem douing this, I found myself puting to much pressure on the rail that way cause the first side bolt to tighten(the rear site ears) is the left one. This raises the rail and wen you do the right side it force the rail back down on the receiver. After tightening the rear elevation screw it puts enven more tension on the rail.

Wen I switched scope a month or so ago I notice due to that assembly sequence I had so much pressure on the rail that it was bent in the middle at least 1/8", it had a banana shape.

I loosened the rail and made shure that wen I tight the right ear the front or the rail wasn't contacting the receiver by holding it up with my fingers.

Just a heads up and imo I still believe this to be the best rail for the m14.

Pop - Thanks for posting this. Great looking range and I'm jealous of you folks who have the room to shoot these distances.

Notwithstanding the MOA of your 1050 yard target, I wouldn't want to be downrange of you. Looks like it was a great day.

Anyone else still playing this game? I just scored a unitized gas system and will be trying to improve my "scores".

Hi Paul,

Please don't close the thread. I am still trying very hard to achieve better result.
I just fit the NM unitized gas system on my M1A and here is the group. Still trying to do the 1.5moa challenge when the weather and time permit.

100 yard iron.

Cheese,

Yes please keep this open. I have met the 100 yard challenge with optics but intend to try again at 2,3,4,500 with optics and irons, time permitting.

I am actually going to attend an Fclass match mid October using my M1A. I don't have a competitive rifle for Fclass anymore but I don't care. I'll be happy to see how I score with my Nat'l Match on Sat at 4,5,600m and on Sun at 7,8,900m. I know my 168g SMK load through previous testing won't group past 700m but I may squeeze a little more distance out of my 168 Berger VLD load that shoots very well and inside my 168g SMK load. I'm still testing with a 175g SMK load but at this time have not shot it past 300m. Anyone have any insight to offer?

I know all the cool Fclass guys are going to laugh at me showing up with my M1A but that will make it all the more enjoyable. I've beat some of them in the past when I had a proper Fopen rifle so maybe they will keep their jabs friendly. 900 meters is going to be interesting. I can't wait! Too bad I won't be able to take pics of the targets but I'll post pics of my score card if anyone cares to know.

Went to the range on Thursday and gave it a try on my new aperture front sight installed. Wanna to share some picture.

Ten shots

First shot was on the bottom left after sight in from 50m. Second shot was on the top and follow by the three at the right. After few click adjustment then attempt another five shots. They all hit the centre and the result pretty good out from the aperture front sight. The ammo is XM M80 149 grain ball ammo.

Will give it a try again next time with M25 national match unitized gas cylinder.

cheese,

What a peaceful looking range you have there Lycan. Almost looks like it could be in a guys back yard.

My club is like my second home. It is a good place to having affair with my mistress:p(my guns). There is nobody between 10 am until noon from Monday to Thursday.

Cheese,

I'd appreciate this thread to stay open!
Just ordered my match reamer for my ss medium weight LRB barrel!
I'll be twisting it on this week and bedding the stock etc... once that reamer shows up its go time!!

No worries guys. Hadn't seen any additional tries at this in a while and was wondering if folks had lost the urge.

If nothing else, the Challenge is useful for documenting what these rifles will shoot and what it takes to get there.

Not sure about anyone else but I definately haven't lost the urge just regrouping!!
Ordered another casm scope mount for the Norinco after stealing the mount off it for the M1A.... o'yea also waiting for more bullets to come in! This is a very expensive challenge but not one I would have wanted to miss.

Just installed my new unitized gas system. Gas lock timed finger-tight at 5:00 with no shims. Funny how the little things make me happy.

Can't wait to see how she shoots now. Hope I don't have to work up new loads.

I've got 3 rifles here, 2 I'm documenting the builds for , once they are done I'll see what they do and post the results.
pretty confident 2 of the three will pass the challenge.
I've been getting a tonne of trigger time in over the past few weeks as my repaired trigger finger is finally coming around (severed tendons) to where nerves are functioning enough I can actually feel the end of the first stage now hehehe and most importantly, I'm back shooting my 45's which was impossible up till a few weeks ago.
I can honestly say, dry firing my m14 in daily drills to get my finger strong working again has been painfull but excellent rehab :D

We have to quite smoking to keep this hobby going.

Cheese,

Can I play now?

I just made the 5-group challenge today with the Blackfeather.

On the left are my Speer 125gr TNT loads and the 6th group on the right is 168gr FGMM. My 5-group average is 1.2412" and if you throw in the 6th group, it's 1.198"

Here's the rifle...

Standard all-GI M1A from 1994 with GI H&R barrel dated from 1962. Shimmed gas cylinder and that's it.

Blackfeather stock, SHG handguard, RBS stock.

Bassett scope mount and Zeiss Conquest 3-9x50.
