If you shoot enough game, you will recover bullets. As c-fbmi says, driving them faster means more of them will stay in.
However, most deer broadside will allow the bullet to exit unless you are using a Berger VLD [not recommended, BTW.]

Top group are mostly Partitions, with 2 or 3 bonded bullets included. Bottom group is all C&C types, with some looking pretty dismal as to retained weight. Some though, are quite impressive.
