Hey guys. I'm looking for a non-bullpup, non-restricted semi auto 5.56 rifle to round out the collection. So far, I have been looking at the Famae 540, the Robinson Arms XCR and the Bushmaster ACR with the 18.6 inch barrel (Nigh impossible to find right now, it seems). Which of those rifles gets the vote? I want reliability and toughness, in addition to good accuracy. Any and all info is much appreciated. Thank you.

you will get your answers if you post this in the black rifles forum. plus there are tons of threads on this same subject. I cant answer for you cause I only own the xcr and havnt shot the other two. love it to death tho!

What about the HK SL8? As is, it is reminiscent of a battle rifle without reverting it into a g36. Also, it is comparable to a Sig in quality vs the famae. I would want a 550 myself but being classed as it is now...

ACR with the Herron Non restricted barrel was for me significantly more accurate than all of XCR's I have shot. I cannot comment of the Famae.

I dont think the xcr is known for being amazingly accurate. it was built for battle. hitting my 12X12 steel gong at 200 yards is accurate enough for me LOL

Do you care about rails?

Do you care about magazine capacity?

I think the XCR with keymod and light profile barrel has some real potential.

I think the FAMAE is a great gun, but you won't be able to slap a beowulf mag in there and blast away.

Essentially the rifles your describing hit different price thresholds too:

You're looking at $2400ish for an XCR.

$2800ish for a FAMAE

And $3200ish for a rebarreled ACR.

Price is not so important. I would rather own a few rifles of great quality than many rifles of so-so quality.

It seems that the ACR gets the nod when compared to the XCR. The real question now is, where can one find a re-barreled ACR in Canada?

Contact Herron directly and they will handle it. Or if you want to save some money get a used restriced ACR off the EE and send it to Herron.

The XCR with light barrel and keymod is SIGNIFICANTLY lighter and far better balanced than an ACR. I would imagine the same applies comparing it to the Famae. You really have to handle the gun to appreciate how much better it is than the competition in this regard.

Just one more data point to add to your decision making process :)

How accurate is the XCR? I want to be able to hit varmints with it from pretty good distances, should the need arise. Also, how is the build quality on the XCR vs. the ACR?

Oh. Haha. Quite literally. When do the green ones come in? Also, is the Famae well-built? It looks a bit tinny to me.

The "go green" comment meant to wait for the possible change in legislation to the Swiss Arms back to non-restricted status and then buy a Classic Green (go green). The pictured rifle is a Swiss Arms Classic Green, not a FAMAE, they're of the same family from different manufacturers.

The Swiss Arms may become legal again? Wow, didn't hear anything about that. Even if so, I would only get one if they were non-restricted, because I want to be able to trek through the bush with it.

Does anyone here have experience with the Famae and the genuine Swiss Arms rifles? I know the Swiss Arms are awesome quality-wise, but are the Famae very similar, design-wise? The only difference between the designs that I have heard of is that the Famaes are stamped, while the Swiss Arms are forged. I may be wrong about that though.

Oh my you are very new.

Yes, the Swiss Arms were non-restricted for 12 years. Until bad things happened.

The FAMAE is similar to the Swiss Arms in many ways. Mags for example.

But, there are two key differences:

The 540 is an older design. It's one generation behind the Classic Green (this is up for debate but not really)

The 540 is made in Chile. It's still well made. But it's not quite "Swiss Watch Grade."
