I picked up myself an SKS 2 weeks ago, during Wholesale sports sale. I am pretty happy with it, except it is bbq finish with some scratches. Album of pics linked http://imgur.com/a/fNRxf

Anyway I can fix this?

What's to fix, look great to me... they're cheap, shoot 'em, clean 'em and put away ;)

I own two, I keep one original and I tapcoed one of them, its got a black bayo to go with the black stock, looks wicked :)

What was wholesale selling them for?

Most excellent! Congrats. I like the matching laminate handgaurd too.
Yesterday WSS told me the sale was $199. Original is $219.
But I heard someone else here mention their local WWS sale price was lower(?)

I guess I can just see all the flaws were the BBQ paint finish is scratched to metal. Not really I functional problem just aesthetic.

Here in Winnipeg the surplus SKS was on sale for $179.99 down from $219.99.

I think eventually I would like another one with wooden stock and original blued finish.

Haven't fires it yet but I got 1200 surplus Czech rounds from Wolverine Supplies which I will dig into this weekend. Also picked up some hornady SSTs for hunting whitetail when I am pushing bush.

I know that when WWS on ST James first got a lot of SKS rifles I talked to a young guy there (who now works at Peavey Mart because too much bull crap at WSS due to the terrible work environment) and that guy actually picked through a bunch and pulled out a few Izhevsk SKS' for me to pick from. I got a numbers matching mint Izzy as a result.
Now, there's no way those crusty, lazy old dogs at the gun counter will do anything like that for you. They don't care about you unless you're buying a Tikka or Sako. Such a shame.

If you want to cover up the scratches, degrease the areas with a gun degreasing spray or brake cleaner and touch them up with some Birchwood Casey Super Blue. It will blend right in with the BBQ paint. Then re-oil the surface and you are good to go.

Well you can't go wrong with that price that's for sure, I paid around the same for my first one then $149 for the other, but that was a door crasher xmas sale.. I bought the same 1200 Czech stuff too and also have Romanian and some Russian stuff... like that the Czech comes on stripper clips though, kinda nice, but it all pretty much shoots the same.

You'll love how they shoot, my two were accurate right out of the box but if yours is off you can buy a $15 dollar sighting tool made for the SKS to fix any problems

Make sure you keep 'er clean after shooting the surplus stuff... I use windex followed by a hot water rinse myself, the ammonia in the windex cuts the salts left from the primers nicely the hot water rinses and dries fast.

Happy shooting

I actually picked up some brake cleaner to clean the bolt, but am worried about using it as the can says don't get on paint.

It can yes, it can also remove bluing.
If I use it on blued parts I use it sparingly, then hit the area with oil immediately.
I recommend Remington Action Cleaner. Its almost exactly like brake cleaner, but safer in those aspects.

Is this an in store only sale? Did you get to pick which one you wanted, I might have to go buy one, I was also going to check if CT still has them on McPhillips.

Not currently on shelves at McPhillips or Kenaston CT. WWS sale is over and they will not pick through crate for you which sucks. Buy from site sponsor instead is my advice.

...i have two ...the first (6 years ago) had a painted finish ...the second was blued ...the first i wound up stripping the paint and putting on a pigmented epoxy finish ...much better ...it is now my go-to sks and i shoot it all the time ...at these prices what's the finish? ...i am reminded of kipling's quip: there's something about loving a woman with a broken nose, you will find women more beautiful, but you will never find one more real ...i really love that first sks!

You don't need to soak the area in brake cleaner. Just spray some on a rag and do quick wipes on the scratches. You will not remove the BBQ finish doing that. But again if you are more comfortable using a different product that is fine I suggested that as well. Thing is you can blend in the scratches with bluing using a q-tip making them virtually unnoticeable.

Yeah the guy wouldn't even bring me out a gun without me saying I was going to buy.
That sucks man. Those guys at the counter have poor work ethic. They don't want to work more than the bare minimum or get any cosmo on their hands. So jaded and disrespectful.
