Ive actually been thinking about one of these. Did you order directly from skinner? Do you recall the approximate delivery time?
Iv ordered multiple times from skinner. From the previous and current owner. All times shipping and receiving the product was quick and questions answered in short order.

Over the years, I've had 4 ... late 60's: an 1892 Winchester rifle (26")converted from 44-40 to 44 Mag, a Model 29 S&W 8-3/8". Early 70's: a tube feed Ruger carbine
and a Marlin 1894. No complaints with any of them.

I agree the rifle carries better without the scope. I've had great success with a Skinner barrel-mount ghost ring on mine. It was easy to install, works with the factory front sight and is more accurate and easier to acquire than the factory rear sight.

If I get another 77/44 I'll be putting on a NECG peep sight. The Skinner is set too far forward for my liking to get rapid target acquisition. The NECG unit fits direct to the rear scope ring groove on the Ruger which gets it properly close to the eye.

Would it be the general consensus (ha!) that a .44 mag lever gun is more than enough for black bear and mule/white tails if normal conditions like appropriate range, shot placement, familiarity with the gun etc. apply?

I am kind of split between picking up a 30/30 and .44 mag lever gun. I don't live somewhere appropriate for a reloading setup and you can't say no to a rifle that shoots 2 pistol calibers.

I have a 1978 marlin 1894 44 mag that a friend generously donated to my collection when he moved away and it has quickly become one of my favorites to hunt with and just good fun to shoot. When he gave me the gun he assured me that it was very effective for squirrels

With stout loads and in close cover applications I wouldn't hesitate. I wouldn't want to stretch the range but in some of that thick sh*te you guys have in Southern BC I think the 44 would work like a hot damn.

I have both, the 44 is my choice. Next purchase will be a 45

If you have the bolt and lever, then you need the semi to complete the Ruger set... if you trade either of your current guns, you will regret it and end up shopping again...

I did agree with you back there, but I have changed my mind. I never use these rifles and I have "frozen shoulder" that could last up to 27 months, so a s/a 99/44 Deerfield with the rotary mag would fit the bill nicely for me. I'm getting old and who knows how much time I have left. So, if anyone wants to work out a trade on their 99/44 Deerfield for either my M77/44 in Walnut or my 96/44 custom built heavy barrel lever action, then lets talk, I'm only a PM away;).

I'm one to talk... I am in the process of attempting to whittle the herd from triple digits down to a meazly dozen or so... I've developed a convulsive facial tick and a stutter... not to mention sharp abdominal pains... and a proclivity for involuntary and random bouts of excessive perspiration... should I see a doctor... or would a CGN diagnosis be more appropriate?

well, I can't believe it, today I have a Ruger 99/44 Deerfield in my hands that I can call my very own! It arrived at the Post Office from a gun buddy in Kingston Ont! I took a poke off the deck right-o-way at our AR500 steel gongs at 25 yards out and I hit it! This is going to be a fun one, I'm sure. I just hope it will group half decently at 100 yards.

Awesome! You guys make me want a 44 magnum or two now...sheesh.

If I ever see a good deal on a 7-10" super blackhawk I'm on it like flies on poop.

A couple of years back some relatives wanted to try out my Winchester Trapper but were a bit intimidated by the moniker 44 Remington Magnum. Hence I acquired some 44 Special just for them. It was shot first off at 25 yards and these two bullets overlapped each other on the target. We were all very impressed. This smaller dimensioned carbine has always delivered and has not been changed at all from it's factory configuration. This surprises even me, as my Dad's 30-30 Carbine has been carrying a Williams FP for several years now.

Trivia: The Trapper's sights are maxed out and sighted for 200 yards, using 240 gr factory ammunition.

Please tell me that you still have the Ruger lever and bolt action .44's also... I really want to say that I am "so jealous" of that set...

P.S - nice friend... sounds like Doug...
