My Marlin 336C review...
I decided to spend my small bonus cheque on a nice gun that would double as a backup deer gun. I had originally had my eyes on the henry 30-30 but after seeing several negative reviews about it I decided to look at the Marlin 336C. It was especially appealing at almost 300$ less than the Henry. The Marlin reviews were overwhelmingly positive with the exception of a few lemons whose owners went on understandable rants.
I decided to go to Lebaron in Ottawa. They had a new one in stock and it was in perfect condition.
Sights were straight, wood was perfect and no marks on the metal. That's always nice to start fresh considering bad experience with Norincos less than desirable machining and slight blemishes on other products purchased new over the years.
I took it to the bush to try a few quick rounds. It fed perfectly and the gun fired! Lol. With winchester PowerPoint 150gr at 50yards it shot slightly to the left and a bit high. After some research I decided to buy brass punches to tap over the iron sight dovetail mount.
I went to the range today. One small tap with the brass punch and the sight was aligned perfectly center on the target after inspecting my shots. Lowered the sight ramp and my rifle is zero at 50 yards.
It was nice that the process was so simple and the adjustments were minor. After 25 rounds through the rifle I'm VERY happy. It also shot the federal Fusion ammo identical to the winchester. That's my deer ammo. Reviews were criticall of the cross bolt safety... Who cares? The gun has half #### and I'll be using that. Times change and manufacturers have to be extra conscious of safety. I can deal with that.
I'd give this gun a 10/10. I've always wanted a 30-30 lever and I'm glad I chose this Marlin336C with the walnuts stock and iron sights.
I highly recommend it! I can't wait to shoot a buck with it in a few weeks (fingers crossed on that one)

The service at Lebaron in Ottawa was friendly as usual and my 10% off with a club lebaron card made my decision where to buy very easy.

50 yards :)

Try LeverEvolution ammo through it, 160 gr FTX, or 140 gr using GMX bullets.

3" high at 100 yds, you should be dead on at 200 yds and with considerably more jam than conventional flat/round noses ammo. Makes an honest 250 yd rifle out of a 30.30.

Great rifles, love mine!

Coincidentally it made the November outdoor life's top 10 hunting rifles in the timber/bush gun category.
Nothing like positive reinforcement to make me feel even better about my purchase!

Congrats ,looks good, seems like you've got a life long keeper

Side note: I thought the W model had the gold trigger?

Congrats on a great purchase - it's a looker too.
I just bought this waffle top 1952 336RC/30-30 this week - they sure hold their value and usefulness a loooong time - if cared for reasonably. Yours should also.

Nice shooting for open irons, but I'd be putting an aperture (ghost ring) rear and a front post on that rifle if it were mine. Check out Skinner Sights if you're interested. By the way, a traditional lever gun is an ideal hunting rifle, nothing else carries as well, good choice!

Congrats....Good looking rifle ; I have an older Marlin 30-30 with a 3-9 Bushell scope......it is my favorite bush rifle ; for long range hunting , I use a 300 Win. Mag.......

What grain count is that federal fusion? 150 or 170? I got 170 and it shot all over the place.. wondering if 150 would work better.

Congrats on the marlin btw, excellent rifle. Its my #1 deer rifle. Also its my only centerfire lol.. and also its my coyote and maybe future moose and bear rifle.

Love it to death, perfect for the stalking hunter.

Lovely mate!

good shootin too tex.

you will be pleased with a Peep sight 'ghost ring' whatever.... more accuract at extended ranges imo! just as fast too!

Good luck on the critters

Congrats and best of luck this season!!! I think of the 30/30 quite often but being out west I always jamb out thinking what if I see the "one" at longer range....
I'm very glad that your Marlin looks so sharp and has no gremlins, has me twitching for one to join my ol 1894... ;)

Funny, the 170gr Fusions group like a laser beam in my 336ss.

The fusion I'm using is 150gr., it shoots tight and consistent as the winchester. It's all that's available to me here.
Although I'm sure it will work fine I would have preferred the 170gr.
I also picked up some black box 150gr winchester power max bonded php. Haven't shot that yet.
Also resurrected some old dominion psp 170gr from the 70's with a $5.25 price tag on it... Have to try that out too.

Thanks for the great review! I just purchased the SS version off of another cgn'er.
I haven't had a chance to take it out to the range yet, but am hoping to get out before my yearly hunting trip in november.
I picked up the Hornandy ammo, lets hope it's worth the extra few bucks!

Love the 336! Mine is the BL model with the laminate stocks. There is just something about a 30/30 marlin.... Not many guns that are just "that fun" as the old Marlin is. I threw some XS ghost ring sights and rail on mine. Sight in at 75 yrs (3.5 inch high) and she is good to go.

I'm hoping to see a return of the Cowboy versions of the 1895 & 1994 along with a 336 Cowboy.

The wish list would be as follows:
- Model 1895 CB in .40-60 & .45-70 .

-Model 1894 CB in .32-20, .38-40 & .44-40 Win.

-Model 336 CB in .25-35 Win., .30-30 Win., .32-40 Win. & .38-55 Win.

Me dreamin' & droolin'.:runaway:
