AR15 Lubrication and cleaning thread

Anyone know the best way to remove Froglube from your firearm? I'm switching to Fire Clean, and want to clean the gun of any Froglube prior to giving it a try. I've heard regular rubbing alcohol, but not sure if it will remove it as it is absorbed into the metal vs. laying on top.

It's not "absorbed into the metal". Non-chlorinated brake cleaner works, I use Naphtha (white gas, camping fuel).

I just spent one whole CQB season with Frog Lube and I sure loved that minty smell. :D

Then came the November CQB match and the FL just got too cold. I removed it all with Brake Cleaner and now have gone back to issued CLP as well as TriFlow from MEC (the tree huggers are suprised that I use their products on boomsticks).

Hope this helps the AR addiction!
Cheers and keep helping the noobs out there.

Since 11 Feb 2014, my last post, I've bought a couple of 6 oz bottles of TriFlow from MEC (Mountain Equipment Coop) in Barrie, ON. I am a member there with a very low / early number and I really love showing them pics of my range activity using their cross country Mtn Bike gloves (and my Glock). ha haha ha Their bike lube is great for AR's! :dancingbanana:

Cheers and keep helping dem nooobs out there!

I can report that 4 years later I am still primarily running ATF....used in a variety of temperatures without a single hiccup. I now use grease on the charging handle though.

what kind of lube for the ar15?

I use good quality oil but I find that its not staying on the carrier enough.

So should I use grease? and which one

thank you

Grease or frog lube. Or CLP

It really doesn't matter. You will be good for whatever IMO. The Canadian forces uses CLP if it's good enough for them it's good enough for a lot of people IMO

In reality CLP isn't good enough, at all. What the army uses or does is hardly ever based on critical thinking and analysis. The firearm industry has done a heck of a lot of research and development and speciality products such as FireClean work a heck of a lot better and longer than anything else on the market, plain old CLP will burn off LONG before your basic synthetic 10W30 oil does.

well the oil is gone after 20 shot

Well I need grease but I wanna know which one to use.

Ive heard somewhere not to use lithium base grease and im kinda lost

Gone from where? You don't "need" grease on an AR. What kind of oil are you currently using, and how/how much do you apply it?

well the oil is not staying one the carrier and bolt... what can i say more??

Im using M-Pro 7 LPX Gun Oil

I always fear when shooting that the gun is dry and that there is wear

Maybe try some FrogLube?...that was recommended to be me by an ERT member and I have had no issues with it. Oil / grease I have been told can burn off with a high round count shoot because of the heat and petroleum in the grease/oil.

I did a milspec test of nearly 10 CLP products. The ones that worked were Break Free CLP and EWL 50 ( which is special order). All the other plant based lubricants failed the rust and powder burn tests!

Did you try G96 CLP spray? I have founf that to be on par with Slip 2000 EWL.
