I was in a store in Calgary today and they're wanting $575 for 1000 rounds of 62 grain FMJ .223 (or $500 for 55 grain).

In the US right now, you can get brand name .223 for $250-$300.

Yeah, yeah - "shipping", "lower dollar" - blah, blah, blah. Neither of these things should account for a ~100% price increase. :/

Kind of like how these retailers #####ed about Brownells selling us Magpul and all of a sudden the price of a Magpul stock doubled overnight.

Pro-tip for Canadian retailers: If you have to rely on "crony-Capitalism" to make a profit, you shouldn't be in business. :/

You could complain that you dont get the prices you deserve, or you could start your own business importing and selling ammo. Should be easy right? Considering the markup you should be a top CGN sponsor in 3 months

OP, why are you entitled to lower prices? Just because you want lower prices isn't going to make it so.

In fact your beef applies to every new vehicle sold in Canada, they are ALL cheaper in the U.S. its the price you pay for living in Canada, period.

But since you asked lets break it down a little for you.

$500 cdn is about $450 usd right now
$100 will account for shipping, paper work, permits, storage, handling etc.
And the CDN retailer has at least 1 or 2 additional distributors they have to deal with which ads on their cost significantly.

In reality the Canadian reseller is making his margin of a few points, he is not gouging you "mr. Spectacular"

If you want a better price, get a license to sell ammo in Canada, another cost and headache, and build the required storage facility to handle it, and get the right insurance, and you could then buy at wholesale prices, and likely save $50-$60 a case and therefore be happy and not have to grip about the terribly high prices…..which if you really want to shock yourself price that ammo or comparable ammo in Pakistan or china…..you will really be mad you live in Canada then.

I just got an ad in the email from scottsdale gun club. They had ammo on sale. The brand was magtec. 1000 rds of 55gr 5.56 for $360 USD. SO that is $411 CAD. I can walk down to P&D and pickup 1000 rds of federal american eagle for about $460 so its not tooo far off, considering the scottsdale price is from a blowout sale.

Damn that brass looks ###ay!

Buy from the retailers in Canada who import their own stuff. They are nearly always much cheaper than small stores. If you don't have any near by order online from one of any of the site sponsors who often run free shipping promos.
I've seen cases of 1000rnds of 55gr FMJ Federal/American Eagle .223 for $360 locally.

That's a pretty good deal if it's true.

I'm kinda with Mr. Spectacular on this one. Considering he was at a retail store selling at those prices, not wholesaler. This assumes the US retailer is turning a profit and that Canadian re-sellers aren't purchasing at Retail prices from the US. Yes? I don't buy from US retailers to retail in Canada. Expect 20-30% for shipping, duty, and tariffs... double and you're taking it ...

You are out the lunch with your math Dizzy
Mr.Spectaculr is right, we are getting fu...d here.
And all you can say is start your own business? Maybe when you break you foot and they let you wait 6 months for a specialist, I can tell say you can start your own hospital.

Nuh - uh .....

AmmoSuppy Kate had Federal Lake City 1K round boxes for $529 - and ya didn't have to wait a month for yer ammo!

So what are you going to do about it? Do you have any ideas or just more "spectacular" teenaged angst? LOL

The advice to start your own store is quite good. I actually looked into it and determined there isn't a gold mine at the end of the rainbow. This is what I found:

VOLUME: when sales volume hits the same level in Canada as it in the US then manufacturers will start giving Canadian retailers better discounts. So actually the pricing is YOUR fault - you don't buy enough. LOL

WHOLESALERS: In the USA retailers can purchase direct from the manufacturer. Most Canadian stores have to go through at least one level of wholesaler and each adds a substantial markup. The wholesalers here have a captive market - they set the pricing more than the retailers do. Blame them, not the retailers.

INTEREST: Most Canadian stores have to pay up front by several months. Money isn't free - look at that balance you're carrying on your CC! LOL

CURRENCY EXCHANGE: sucks. Money for nothing.

RISK: currency exchange rates fluctuate, and the retailer and wholesalers accept risks accordingly - the entire profit margin can evaporate before he even gets his shipment. If a merchant accepts risk, guess who pays for it? Hint: look in the mirror.

SHIPPING costs a lot more to ship from US to Canada than it is for domestic US shipping. US retailers don't have to pay for customs clearance, or licensing, or export permits.

That's what I found when I looked into it. A clever business man can find ways to lower those disadvantages somewhat but our prices will NEVER be as low as US prices, and it doesn't matter how much you squeal about it. :)

They may list lower prices in the USA but try finding stock. You have NOTHING to complain about. America is being disarmed.

BS. Americans have purchased more firearms and more ammunition on the last 5 years than they have in the previous 30 years. Nobody is being disarmed - the shortages are entirely self induced. Firearms and ammo factories have been running full out for domestic consumption. Even the NRA says the "disarmament" theory is pure horse crap. People who used to be satisfied with a couple boxes of .22 cartridges in the house now feel they need 20,000. The only thing that changed in the last few years was the panic level.

The costs of doing business in Canada are far higher. We have much higher minimum wages, "free" healthcare, more social benefits, higher energy costs, higher shipping costs, higher taxes.

Who do you think pays for all those "benefits"? How do you think you pay for all those "benefits"? Remember that the wholesalers and retailers also pay those higher costs and taxes, and they pass them on to you. It's a vicious circle.

Welcome to a socialist country.

Take a close look at the far more socialist countries in Europe. Their cost of exactly the same goods are double ours. And on top of that, their sales tax (HST/GST) is 19% to 25%, except on food and necessities, the tax on those is only 7% to 12%. Yep, tax on food. Coming to a socialist country near you.

Lowest VAT in Europe is Germany, 19% and "only" 7% on food and necessities
France 20%
England 20%
Scandinavian countries 25%
Spain 21%
Italy 22%
Netherlands 21%
Hungary 27%

A VW Golf that costs about $20K here, costs the equivalent of $40k in Germany, plus taxes in their respective countries. And their incomes are similar to ours.
