7mm08 questions...

Hey all,

So long story short I suffered an injury to the rotator cuff on my right shoulder a while back. Not requiring surgery I thought I would be good to go for deer season this week. Unfortunately I can't shoot my trusty .30-06, the recoil on that side is not doable. I asked some questions of my doctor and was told that it may or may not be good to go down the line. He said that with time I should be fine but to avoid further issues I may want to look at a lighter calibre (less recoil)

I'm not a fan of the .270. I know a lot of guys that use them and do well but I have no desire to own one. I'd like a rifle, in stainless steel , that I can go for bear and whitetail with the odd moose or elk if the draw comes through.

I've been eyeballing the 7mm08 recently as a potential replacement, it seems like it would fit the bill with less recoil and enough power to knock down anything I'm gonna hunt in the next 20 years. Thoughts? Also I'd appreciate input on models of rifle as my .06 is a savage axis and I'd like to go a little higher end. Thanks for the input appreciate the help guys.

get a much heavier 30-06 and the recoil will go down, a 5 pound rifle kicks a lot harder then a 10 pound rifle, the heavier of the two is just a real pain to carry everyday.

You could also load your 06 down to 308 levels and still make use of the rifle you own, lighter bullets and lighter load, heck if the 30-30 can do so can a 30-06 loaded down to 30-30 levels

I have a 270 in a win 70 or I would certainly look at the 7 08 in the same rifle, I have owned 2 7mm 08s that I bought for my wife [yeah right] one was a Savage 11 and the other was a Remington 7, the Remington had too much recoil for her and the Savage was just tolerable, she is a little sensitive. I found the recoil quite light but noticeably more on the Remington it had a harder pad and I think was a little lighter. Assuming you can someday shoot the 30 06 the 7mm08 would still be nice to have.

Yo Dave has it right. I would save the money I am putting into a new rifle and spend it on a re loaders starter kit if you don't already have one. Then you get the true freedom of a do-all caliber and the homey type feel of a trusted rifle.

:agree:

A heavier rifle delivers less 'felt' recoil. I would suggest a hefty 7-08... What's your budget?

There is far too much logic in this thread, I always believe that it is our unspoken duty to help a fellow CGNer justify buying a new rifle.

where are you located? I have a good stash of H4895, some light bullets and some once fired 30-06 brass.............short of that order a new stock for your axis that is going to weight at least 3 or 4 times that of your plastic factory stock........or sell the axis and buy a good 30-06.....you have a healthy budget number and a budget minded rifle........mind boggling.........

I would say 1500 or so for my budget on this

Best go to a shop somewhere close to you and find which models fit you, then pick one with some weight to it. If you have access to Coopers they have a good heft to them. Lots of the older model used guns are heavier too. I'm not a fan of light rifles, I would rather carry a heavier one that holds on target better and delivers less recoil into my shoulder.
Also, if you're interested in 7-08, don't write off a 7x57 if you come across one - hell even a 6.5x55 would be a pussy cat - my 6.5x54 sure is.

Edit:

Take a look at this recoil calculator and you'll see how much recoil is reduced by simply shooting it from a heavier rifle - http://www.handloads.com/calc/recoil.asp

I went from 30-06 as my main hunting rifle to 308, then 7mm-08, which I really really love, just bought a 7x57, it arrived in the mail yesterday and I also have a 260 to get at, just haven't had the time. I'm looking for a Browning Shortrax (s/a) in 7mm-08, would also consider 308, that should have next to nothing for recoil. OP, with $1500 in your pocket to spend, it's always always sooooo exciting to go shopping for a new gal. Keep the 06 for later days ahead. You know the old saying: "a man with two guns ________________". Good Luck.:)

A little out of the box but have you considered a muzzle break? I have a 7 Rem Mag and a 7/08. With the muzzle break on the Rem Mag, there is less felt recoil than on the 7/08 in my opinion. Mossberg 4x4 come with the break installed in a variety of calibers. While it is an entry level rifle with all that that entails, it is accurate , inexpensive, durable, and reliable. As a bonus it has minimal felt recoil. Frankly I was amazed by the reduction in recoil. (It's the only rifle I own with a muzzle break)

My grandson stepped up to 7mm08 this year and this little rifle is fantastic. Hardly any more recoil than his 243 and a lot more stopping power. I am thinking that I may switch to this caliber for all my shooting.
