I'm posting with my phone, I'm old and my eyes ain't all that great and I can't see if there's any way to add a poll to this thread.
When I get home onto a proper computer I'll check and try to add one if there is that option.

For now though, this question is NOT for the angry SKS purist who insists if it ain't no wood it aInt no GOOD.
there are tens of millions of SKSs in wood pyjamas. I like to be a.bit different. I like black guns and I don't have ANY tattoos :-O

But, all the mods I've done to my '54 tula refurb are completely reversible. All I did was to add a Tapco intrafuse stock and it wears some detachable mags that didn't require any gun altering.
I'm running a spring loaded firing pin bolt in it from a '50.
But its a '54 tula refurb. Even if I was to chop it up and weld it back together it would be no great harm to the world of rare and collectible millitaria.

OK so I'm sitting here looking at her and info take care if.my stuff. The steel coloured bolt and bayo kinda glisten from under a few microns of oil. But that got me to thinking...when the zombie shtf and I'm out running my over 50year old arose around shooting up bad guys....well when I'm all camoed-out and blending-in to the brush that damned bayo is gonna reflect the sunlight straight into the lifeless eyes of those gray-skinned deadbeats giving my position away.

I think we all know what happens next...I get bit by one of those half rotted bastards, I turn into one of them and we all go back to my family's hiding place for supper.
We can't have that so..
For you who have tacticool SKSs that arent unissued '49s or '49 DDR Izzy sniping paratrooper carbines (the rarest SKS out there), have you seen photos of an ALL BLACK SKS? With a blue bayonet and bolt carrier in a black stock? There are.some.pics floating.around. They look pretty damned sweet.
If you're going black with a stock anyway...it isn't all that difficult.to.do a decent cold blueing job at home.
Oh..if you have an all black SKS please.feel free to add photos here.

I'm on the fence. I like the look of the white shiny metal on it. To me it says tactical but very serious. This is no s2k son! They made these when men were MEN...and women were too.
But black just has a.. .ummm sinister? look to it. It says don't mess with me. I'm all go and no show!

What do you bubbas say? Yay to the black or no thanks. I'll stick to silver because my SKS is one in a million! I mean ...my SKS is one in like 100,000,000 so im doin it!!

Go the other way n chrome the bugger. Blind those effin zombies when you run dry ;)

Or nickel plate for something a bit less stark.

Steampunk it. Lol

I actually hate it when people use the, "one in a several million." excuse. If you want to do it then just do it. Don't justify you doing it by a ridiculous excuse like that. Sure, the SKS is one in several million. About ten - fifteen million. Maybe even more I don't even know. But that number doesn't mean ####. The number that matters is the number that is in our country.

I love my SKS. But I keep it original. Keep it wood. If you want a black rifle, buy a black rifle. SKSs can't take a scope well and have other issues. I love my ar with Lar mags but are restricted. Buy an un-restricted black rifle and leave the sks for plinking.

Here's a good trick for staining a wood stock a non stain color. Strip the existing finish to bare wood, sand lightly if needed to get the finish of the wood smooth. Get a can of spray paint the color you want to stain the wood, black in this case. Hang it from a wire, cord etc and give it a couple good paint coats, let it soak in but not dry. Take a rag soaked in paint thinner, varsol etc and wipe off the excess paint. The paint thinner will help dilute and sink the paint into the grain, if the paint stain isn't dark enough re do it till it's to your liking. Varnish, shellac or blo/tung oil to your liking.

It works very well, I'll be doing this to an sks I picked up recently. Black stain of the original stock with a couple coats of clear shellac. Added with a bc tactical scout mount and red dot it will be a nice mix of stock and minor tactical without any plastic crap. When I bought it the stock was sanded, probably when refurbished and the receiver and barrel parkerized black. So it's should be a tastefull mod and #### it it's my rifle after all. I can do what I want to it in the end, I'll keep my cherry looking 53 Tula refurb as it came from the arsenal.

I like black guns and I don't have ANY tattoos :-O

Wtf does having tattoos or not have to do with it? I'm covered in tattoos and I love wood furniture on milsurps and firearms in general. Tactical has it's place as well but don't get things twisted by how people look or what they choose to do with themselves when it comes to what they choose to shoot.

I durabaked my bolt carrier, had a problem with it rusting, figured to hell with this and ordered the kit. I regret nothing. Also swapped out the original stock and magazines to Tapco, I kept the originals and am probably going to switch them back by summer. I'll keep the stock and magazines for a different SKS, maybe a norinco if I come across one around here.

While I like to keep my milsurps reasonably close to stock, I see no reason why a tasteful modification like bluing shouldn't be done.

I may acquire a second SKS so I can experiment with taking off the bayonet and mount, leaving the barrel nice and non-catchy for bushwhacking. Bayonet lugs are the worst.

I just finished a laminated project today, bought another from WSS after picking throught a few and stripped `er down including the mechanicals.

Mixed up my own blend, kind of a cherry/fruitwood with a hint of mahogany red ,looks nice.I plan on buying another and do something in a grey dye (aniline).Great guns to experiment with ,but really only on the older painted refurbed stuff IMO.

I've got one or two lying around that I might darken this winter. Blue the bolt carriers and bayos, add ventilated handguards and hit the stocks with bed-liner.
