Mini 14 Vs MR1

Is it possible to get the mini to accept the Beowulf/AR mags? Must be possible...practical? Only thing holding me back from a mini14, is the 5rd mag...must be a way. Not likely I'm the first knucklehead to think of this, eh?

On the original question, I ruled out the MR1 because of the safety. I found it difficult to disengage. YMMV.
.
Really? It's a bit stiff but certainly easier to operate than the abortion on the Mini, especially if you're at all used to most shotgun safeties.

I have both an MR1 and a Mini 14 and much prefer the MR1 in all respects except price.

Not so far. The way the Mini mag goes in; it must be inserted at an angle then pushed into position the rest of the way. the rear of the mag has the catch on it. AR mags; this is done on the side. The mini mag is much easier to insert if you have one of the old 20 round mags. the factory mag can cause some fiddling around to get it in. AR mags, just stuff them straight in.

I'd be interested in seeing accuarcy tests with the MR1 because it's hard for me to believe it could compete with a bolt gun. Let alone a T3. I'd have to reconsider my choice if it's as accurate as that!

And .223 is a no go in Ontario. Not all provinces have the same caliber restrictions.
actually, .223 IS legal in Ontario for hunt deer.
nothing beats pushing bush with a tavor.
I never liked the ergo's of the MR1, felt awkward for me. seam's like a solid firearm tho. one think for sure, I miss the mini.

You must be one of those guys that don't signal when changing lanes because of the terrible agony of moving your finger an inch lol. Of all of the legitimate complaints about the Mini this one is just too much. The safety is right there in front of your trigger finger, should it operate itself? Not to mention its part of the charm, it is after all a Mini M14.

During the mag shortage both in the states and up here I'm sure if it were easy someone would have figured it out. There is no easy or practical way of modifying a mini to take STANAG mags unfortunately, which is a big detraction for some. On the plus side, Ruger factory mags for the mini are top notch quality.

Not just a "bit stiff" but very stiff. If the safety on the Benelli moved as easily as the one on my Beretta 391s I'd own an MR1. I have owned Mini and found the safety which is patterned after the Garand easier to use. My issue with the Mini was accuracy not the ergonomics of the rifle.

I just missed a collapsible stock MR1 on the E E.From some ruger forums I have read that the mini 14 is heavy once you add a tactical stock. With black Friday coming I'll see what price I can find on a new mr1 if not I'll keep checking the EE.

I have a 582 model mini14 with a barrel stabilizer ( accustrut ). I can get 1 moa out of the rifle as long as its not being shot at rapid fire. I also use both factory and tapco mags. Tapco mags are just as reliable so far for 35 bucks a mag FYI. Great little rifle!

Is that an aftermarket stock you have on your mini?

I've heard them called a lot of things, but "charming" is a new one!

while im not cutting playing cards in half lengthwise at 100 ive never had a problem with my Mini14 for accuracy.
got it brand new from the store 3 years ago for $800 then 80 for a black Hogue stock.
picked up 10x30/5 mags from marstar and the gun has been flawless.

thinking of putting some optics on it this winter but for on the quad and in the truck i prefer the open sites.

I took my newly shortened to 18.5" MR-1 out today.

I was very pleased with the lack of daytime (it was dark and rainy) muzzle flash from the Dlask flash hider. It worked very well.

Shooting 1995 Norinco ball at 100 yards it printed like this. I think I yipped that one at 6 o'clock taking it to 4.1" but I didn't call it. Otherwise it was 3.2" which is close to it's average. I shot this group off the bench but at a medium rate of fire ~1/second.

At 192 yards, slow fire with the same Norinco ball ammo it shot 5.5" using the 200m Accurange reticle instead of the 100m centre crosshair. I hope to take it out to 300 and 400m to test the Accurange reticle more.

The barrel shortening has not reduced the accuracy. Thanks Dlask!

Vz 58 - $999.95 comes with 2 magazines and cleaning kit. Already has pistol grip and adjustable AR-15 stock. non chrome lined. Available in 5.56 or 7.62x39. Both can be converted to take AR magazines.

Vz-58 Short Optic Mount - $75.95

Vz-58 Receiver Side Rail - $59.00

Rings - $50.00

Decent 1-4x22mm scope - $200 +/- $50

Use left over money saved by purchasing magazines, ammunition, muzzle break, tactical bolt release, or converting Vz 58 to take AR magazines.

Given the choice, I would go with the MR1. Accuracy is good for a semi and the ARGO system on the Benelli's is just plain awesome and extremely reliable. AR mags is a big plus as well. Mini's are fun to shoot but if you do plan on dropping an animal as you stated, accuracy weighs heavy in the decision.

If the MR1 is shooting 3-4" groups at 100 with Nork Ball it is in my experience, in the same class of accuracy as a new mini 14. I think this boils down to flavor. If price is no object get the one that you think looks cooler. In my case, I've always loved the look of the mini 14, though I can definitely see the appeal of the MR1.

My MR-1 is no tack driver but I freely admit that I am not a great shooter. It's also limited by the 7x Redfield scope. With a 9x even shaky old me could do a bit better.

I am still going to buy a Mini 14, preferably an older iron sight wood model. Just to piss off Wendy and Heidi.
