Shooting surplus rounds from a "new" rifle and keeping it clean, rougly how many rounds would it take to shoot a barrel out to the point of losing accuracy?
Thanks!

Your cleaning technique will determin the life of your barrel. If you have a new rifle with new barrel and you are using issue steel cleaning rod, its only a matter of time when your steel cleaning rod damages the crown of your new rifle and thus rendering your rifle inacurate. This is what happens to most MN. As soldiers clean barrels they don't really pay attention to the crown, as long as the bore is clean and shiny, the sarge is happy. Bore on your surpluss rifle may be fine but if crown is worn, your rifle will not be accurate. The only solution would be to recrown it.
Otherwise if you clean your MN each time after shooting, from breach end, you'll have many years of life out of your barrel.

Brass or aluminum usually. I just went through my first crate of surplus and recently had used an m44 that was shot out. Was more curious on a rough idea on what kind of round count that could do that

23,567 give or take 5. Ok of course that's an arbitrary number, but with proper cleaning/care it is quite possible that the Mosin will outlast you. If you have fear of shooting it out, scoop up another 1 or 2 and put them away for future continued enjoyment while prices/availability are quite reasonable.

One has to wonder , with the supposed corrosive nature of the ammo and Ivan's lack of a technical background, a fair percentage of Soviet soldiers were Illiterate, that so many survived in shooting condition to this day.Maintenance in combat was apparently not a high priority, reading history books.

Grizz

About 6 seconds if I remember correctly. No kidding. Has to do with dwell time. The actual time a bullet spends traveling down the barrel.
