Lots of paper towels, carb cleaner, then I use G96 lubricant and rags to oil. After shooting it or having it out in the sun more oozes out and you can start over again.
Throw the metal parts in the shower as hot as possible for 15 min, then wash it with soap and an old tooth brush and let it sit another 15. Then follow with break cleaner wipe off, dry and oil. Everyone has there own method.
i boil the cosmo off the small parts, pour lots of boiling water over the larger parts such as the receiver,(bayonet stuck in the ground is very handy is this instance). you might need to scrub some of the brown gluelike substance off here and there. wipe down the wood with a non alcohol based cleaner. soak the metal with copious amounts of CLP(also available thru your Sqn Stores), wipe down and reassemble.
But don't confuse the light grease on a lot of the SVT refurbs with cosmoline. These clean off perfectly with a light dunk in relatively safe kerosene. I doubt that I've spent more than half an hour fully cleaning any one of mine.
There are many solvents that work really well to clean of the metal parts, as mentioned. To clean off the wood, remove as much as you can with a cloth, then wrap the wood stock in paper towel and newspaper really tight and set it on the dashboard of an old car in the summer time on a sunny day and let the heat slowly bring it out. If you don't get the grease out of the wood it will ooze out every time the rifle gets hot from shooting.
