I agree. I've had several different versions of PU snipers. One thing I found very interesing about the Molots, especially the Izhevsks...is that the old scope number was ground off the left side of the barrel. You can see it in the barrel profile. There would be no reason to grind them unless there was a number there before.
The Tulas never had a number, different story. Harder to know the truth. They will have the CN or CH stamped on the barrel knox, but easy enough to do that with 2 stamps.

I did finally have an original with original scope number. The scope number font is quite different than the Molot ones. Obvious difference when you can compare them.

Should mention that on Gunboards, they had a thread with original sniper serial numbers. You could compare if your Molot refurb fell into the same ranges...the ones I checked did as did other people's.

I don't want to argue here. I met with Molot and I ask them is it real. Rules in Russia forbid export of National treasure and those consider to be national treasure. It is very simple. Send me Pm and I will tell you how it was done.

This is one a the first thing I have noticed.
 
The font on the scope & some of the renumbered parts is relatively modern. There has been some clean up, renumbering & in some cases rebluing. Still doesn't make then repro. Some of the rifles have NOT been renumbered so that would make it kind of hard to fake.

Sounds like there are a few around ; but the question is are they real or fake . Sometimes someone will get taken on a fake , so after they realize their mistake , they quickly try to resell the firearm so as to recover some , or all , of their money . There could be some folks out there who honestly believe that they have the real deal , but the firearm in question could still be a fake ?
 
Well, some feel that they are all fakes. They may well be.

The only thing you can really trust are vet bringbacks. Since we were not at war with the Russians, they're a bit thin on the ground.

But that doesn't mean you will get more for one. I had one for sale a while back that was undeniably real, with original font on the barrel, never scrubbed etc, no shellac on the stock. It was ignored along with the rest of them. The market for them has been saturated lately, just like Mausers and SKS's.

The main thing is, people want them cheap...if they are expensive they won't sell, regardless of what they are.

I think we can put this to bed.

The scopes are original WWII production.
The majority of the mounts are WWII production (some are forced matched).
The rifles/parts are original WWII production/post war production (forced matched).
Many of the receivers/barrels are original WWII Snipers and some are probably converted by Molot.

Still the sum of parts (mixed original parts) make them a better deal than the more expensive reproduction rifles/scopes.
