Rossi Hand Ranch Modified Stock Legality

I need some clarification. If I were to install say a boyds 92 rossi stock on my Rossi Hand Ranch would it be classified as a prohibited firearm? I have seen lots of guys that have done so, but I'm not sure if it is legal. According to the definition of a prohibited rifle I believe that it would be illegal (prohibited).

a) firearm that is adapted from a rifle or shotgun, whether by sawing, cutting or any other alteration, and that, as so adapted,
is less than 660 mm in length, or
is 660 mm or greater in length and has a barrel less than 457 mm in length,

After the installation of the new stock the rifle would be 660mm greater in length and would have a barrel that is less than 457mm in length. So, I believe it would be classified as a prohibited rifle. What is confusing is that in its stock form the Rossi ranch hand should be classified as prohibited. Should it not? It is 24" in length thus satisfying the first condition. However, I am no expert, please inform me!

You are ok, the ranch hand is classified as a rifle and is manufactured to that barrel length as non restricted. Adding the stock is no big deal as you have not sawed the barrel or the original stock. I just did my Chiappa Mares Leg, no worries. My only problem was finding the full stock with a matching grain. In certain light it looks funny compared to the original short 'leg' wood grain and finish.

Ok thanks for clarifying. However it does state or any other alteration. To me this means that swapping in a different stock would satisfy that condition.

You're OK buddy. Still non restricted. If you're that afraid don't buy one. I feel that perhaps you should give up guns all together If you're that paranoid. I'll just enjoy my 3 mares legs with full stocks. I even put skinner sights on mine... That must blow your mind!!!

No, the prohib is based on the barrel length modification, not a complete firearm modification unless you are building a bull pup. The barrelled action for the Rossi ranch hand is non res, adding a stock does not modify the barrel length but does increase the overall length that as you mentioned already satisfies that part.

You are most welcome! Have some fun with it, the full stock makes it much more comfortable to shoot!
 
Another option is a magnetic stock-extender = short section of rear stock that attaches/ quick-detaches via recessed-magnet to the back of the Ranch Hand's metal buttplate. The magnet obviously should be strong, and if so, the setup works perfectly.

These are not my pics but mine is similar minus the kydex section -- which I'll add to mine one of these days.

Hey, yup mine are all different calibers, I have a Chiappa in 357, Henry in 44mag, and Henry in .22
I even have the 1887 12g shotgun, all with full stocks. I'll get some pics :)
