How does the remmy model 7 action compare to the 700?

Hi All,

I am new to precision shooting...i have seen a ton of threads on the 700 and all of its variants but not much on the model 7...what are the differences between these actions? is the 700 way better?

as i recall, the model 7 is enestially a shorter version of the 700 (shorter rear bridge, and ejection port), for the WSM cartridges. how ever the 700 is a bit better if you want to shoot heavier bullets seated a bit longer. but other then that they are identical as far as design / bolt lock up/ ejection/feeding etc. unless your trying to save every ounce on a WSM mountain type rifle build there is no reason to pick a 7 over 700

ok thanks...the reason i was asking is because the AAC bolt action rifle uses the model 7 action while Remington offers a 700 in 300 blackout so if i were to go with that caliber, i guess the 700 would be a better choice? i am just doing some research and read a pretty negative review on the AAC gun

yes i would choose the 700 over the 7 any day, the after market is much bigger (stocks, rails ) the 300B.O is fairly short as its a necked up .223 and while it would work in the 7, if down the road you ever wanted to rebarrel to somthing else you have limited your self off the bat. and the re-sale market is also slimmer

The while Model 7's were certainly chambered for WSM's that has nothing to do with their development or lineage. They are an evolution of the Model 600, 660 action. XR100, XP100 were the same.

I've built rifles on XP100's, M600/660, M700, M7. Same barrel thread tenon as 700. Will accept same trigger, all short actions excluding XP100 will accept same magazine and same magazine port plug as the 700 SA. The XP's and 600's are much better quality than the 700's and M7's built these days. Only change I would make on a 600 is that ugly dog-leg bolt has to go. My last custom build was was an M600, single shot, chambered 6.5X47Lapua, Jury 1:8 barrel, laminated bubinga stock, built to compete in F-open. It shoots. If ordering a MacMillan stock inlets for XP100, M600, and M7 are available. My M600 6.5X47Lapua was built by Custom Gunworx, Rocky Mtn. House, AB. The stock is Custom Gunworx designed and built. In the bags the stock tracks like a dream.

To the OP, that M7 fits the 6.5X47Lapua to a tee.

Mechanically, they do the same thing and can be made to perform the same within the length limits of the action.

BUT the aftermarket supports the 700 a zillion times more vs the M7.

If the goal is to build a more compact rig set up on the M7 strengths, go for it.

If you want to have an action where you may want to change through a range of parts and styles and sports, get the 700

Some trigger manfs consider the M7 different then the 700.

If I ever build the perfect hunting rifle for a son or wife: One that would be stunning to behold, hold and shoot it would be a wood stocked Remington 7 chambered in 250 Savage. As has been said, the 7 is a more compact action than the 700 which could be worse or better depending on application. In the above application, a model 7 would be better.

For my current needs and wants, it's an assortment with a couple 700s in the mix.
