Hello GUn Nutz.

I am seeking so me wisdom with the GMRS radio equipment available today. I am looking for a good long range radio. What do you guys like, and why?

I like the beofeng uv-5r,
Much better than any frs/gmrs radios off the shelf. Plus it can tune in radio stations as well.

The only thing you have to be careful of is that you must program the frequencies, and avoid using ones outside the frs/gmrs range.
However, if you want you can listen to a wide range of channels.

Did the same, only I went with the UV-82.

just a tip and some info'.
FRS/GMRS radios sold in canada are programmed according to the Canadian law limiting output power to 2 wats.
same or similar model radio in the US is programmed according to US law limiting of 5 wat transmission output.

Another vote for UV-5R plus...from ebay.
LOTS of internet forum and info on this little radio.

use the free CHIRP software to program it. The software already has the GMRS/FRS frequencies on a spreadsheet.

Do a little reading on the legalese regarding frequencies and their use. But then again, if you ever need your radio in an emergency, to hell with legal frequencies or transmitting power.

That is accounted for in the legislation. In an emergency you can transmit on what ever freq and what ever power you have available.

I am aware that in an emergency you can do what you need to to survive, but if you are going to buy a radio that is capable of breaking laws, you should make yourself aware of the laws.

Have 4 gmrs advertised @ 54 kms range won't do 1.5 km from one corner of my property to the other on high output. Fairly heavy deciduous woods, 54 km in space maybe but not on this planet....

I just ordered these off eBay... 8W of power each. $105 CAN for both and free shipping.

We use UV-5R's in the bush. I have a 2 spare radios that I set up somewhere high to use as a repeater - it really extends the range.

Here's a question, what frequencies are you using? Just make sure you are using gmrs, commercial and avoid avoid public safety frequencies. It's ok to interfere with a store, but avoid the government stuff
