What do you guys think is more valuable to buy. SKS or SVT-40? I know SVT is more limited but the SKS is way cheaper ammo wise. Everything is telling me to buy the SVT but when the sks are 160 each it becomes hard to decide.

Vz52.57 goes up in price every year....

SVT-40 has doubled in price in the last year

SKS has been the same...

I have all 3 and I shot the #### out of them, So by the time I take my dirt nap they will be worth nothing to me.... lol....

The SVT will be the one that goes up in value faster than the SKS. And that will depend on how good an example you have as they come from very good to some pretty rough copies.

Honestly I feel the Mosin Nagant is the way to go for investment. The models that would be good for it would be M44s and M38s as well as any original M91s and Finnish Mosin Nagants (provided they are picked up at a good price).

The issue with the SVT-40 for investment is that even though there were less made then SKS Canada happens to be one of the few countries able to import them. Also the fact that when surplus ammo runs out it is going to be 1$ a round because of what it does to the brass (look at the way the fluted chamber is on the brass, good for cheap surplus, not so good for boxer primed brass, it will significantly kill your brass life).

The issue with the SKS is that once again Canada happens to be one of the few countries able to import them as well. Also not too many people are going to be shooting them when the cheap surplus runs out (it happened to all the older semi-autos it will likely happen to this one as well).

Best idea if you are looking for a investment, is to buy surplus ammo as when that runs out its gone. What might be 200$ for 1440rds today could be 500$ down the road.

Overall don't buy rifles as investments buy them because you enjoy them. Personally I prefer shooting the SVT-40 to my SKS, that being said it took a while before I got ammo my SVT-40 liked and functioned properly with. I also haven't shot my SKS in over 6 months as I feel there are better things to spend my time shooting.

With these Russian guns, think about investment in 20 to 25 years.

Shoot them and have fun.

BUT, an unrefurb, unfired, unissued all match Russian SKS, that's an investment to keep aside in the guns locker.

I can only afford to shoot surplus right now and really enjoy them. I love mosins but its so hard to find good shape ones. My mosin is my most used gun. Sks to me is to inacurate, I would take a SVT or good working mosin over sks anyday. I still keep the SKS for plinking tho. One day ill move to .223 when I got money.

huh? since when did a SVT-40 double in price?

Nice SVT's were super cheap last summer, I just had to pay almost 400$ to get one couple of weeks ago .... and some site sponsors have them for sale even higher.

P&S has many dozens of SVT's for sale and I'm pretty sure their prices haven't changed in the last year. There will be lots available for $300.00 next year as individuals get tired of them. Personally, I've bought a bunch of the refurbs to shoot but I suspect they're not a great "investment" unless you're willing to wait a long time while attrition thins the supply. The typical refurb has little collector value other than as a good, functioning example of the type.

I would not purchase either of these with any dreams of them being a collectable investment... My plan is simply to shoot them and enjoy them until such time as cheap surplus ammo is no longer available... That may well not happen in my lifetime, since the AK round is still being made by the millions... Even 54R is still in service in many places, no?... Still, having one nice example of each along to the reckoning can't be a bad bet.. or a crate of each;)

I really don't think we will ever see the high value that unmolested Mausers and Enfields bring... There are just too many red rifles...and they don't have the same historical significance to Canada, although many people who have immigrated in the last half century will have had personal/family ties to red rifles...

I didn't interpret the OPs question as wanting to buy the rifle that will be of more collector value later.
I believe he asked what rifle would be the best to invest in with regards to rifle and ammo cost in the long run. IE; best long term bang for buck.

Ah I see... in that case I would go SKS, because ammo will always be cheaper, the rifles themselves are a smaller initial investment... Of course, once you have one, you still buy an SVT anyway...and a Mosin... that is just how this red rifle thing works...lol

they are everywhere still at the same price of $299 , I first shop at sponsors but over $450 for a SVT-40 is taking me to the cleaners. Then I go somewhere else. Sure the CAD$ lost some value but 10 % isn't $150, I know a little but of math myself, lol.

I think there are good deals on Russian SKS right now, everybody wants a Chinese one but I have one which I bought for $150 (type 56 unissued) when plenty ware around and it is not as good as the nice Russian with wood stock or laminated. Just my opinion.

299$ are refurbs... and Ive seen some of them and they are in poor condition.... The good ones are a bit more money.... I didnt mind paying 349$ + Ship from P.S to get a VG+ one with perfect bore....

None just buy both and shoot the s#it out...
If you need to invest earn money stock is way to go...
Buy firearm to shoot... not as investment
