I make a decent salary in a skilled trade. Do you think my boss charges the same rate that he pays me? He has a building to pay for. Heating costs a couple of grand a month. I don't even want to think what he pays for Hydro with 11 cnc machines and the same number of manual machines. Then there is property tax, benefits, workers comp premiums. Shall I go on? To run your own business, you don't get away with just factoring your wage or you won't be in business for very long

Just curious, the ranting is funny, but what barrel are you having screwed on what gun?

A friend had a norinco 14.5 barrel with a low Por gas mount, he just purchased an NEA 10.5 barrel on EE and he wants to get it installed along with a battlecomp 2.0 comp. He calle around and got a quote from one of the shops in Vancouver. I was awoken by the message he sent me and was enraged.

This being said, I've never heard of an $85 dollar an hour. I've always brought it to places that charged me $35 an hour shop charges (edmonton) or to friends.

Most trades charge out a 4 hour minimum, so 85 an hour is on the low end of a billable scale for professional services, and its a single hours, not a minimum threshold. That's a deal if your not competent to do the work yourself.

Think $85/hr is bad... try getting a tattoo. Afterall, it is "just doodling" right... no skill involved at all, everybody can do it, and has the knowledge/capabilities /sarcasm

Gunsmiths are worth their wage, and $85 is extremely reasonable.

For the barrel change on your own... add up the cost of tools to do it, factor your time, and then reconsider if hes being outrageous. This doesnt even factor in rent and other fees.

Well it's better than service plumbers or electricians, at least most gunsmiths actually have more overhead and investment into tools than a vehicle payment and some inexpensive hand tools

Someone wanted to charge me $85 (estimated an hour) and $15 for the part. The part costs $2.97 and a youtube video showed me how to charge the in less than 2 minutes.

Darn those gunsmiths!

Who do they think they are; charging for their time + the pro-rated cost of tools, materials, professional fees, utilities, marketing, etc...

I mean, it's not like small businesses have any real overhead. Where does he get off charging rates like that?

Wait, I bet his business is incorporated. Am I right?

I've heard a lot of bad things about evil corporations these days...

You know what OP? Your buddy should learn the trade, set up shop in the same market, charge what you think is fair and drive this other guy out of business. More gunsmiths benefit us all anyway.... On second thought, maybe there should just be price controls. Let's say, no more than $25 / hour for any skilled labour, be it mechanics, gunsmiths, dentists, whatever. I'm speaking hypothetically of course, obviously our illustrious benefactors in government will tell us what the true fair price is. You know, as the old saying goes comrade; "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need!"

To those that get the sarcasm: Cheers!

To those that don't: No, I don't want fries with that.

Wahts ring with my spelling!?!?

Seems like I've stirred the old mans nest here.
I wouldnt necessarily say it's just the "old man's nest". Seems like people are all about the self-entitlement of everything nowadays. Want everything for nothing and dont even blink an eye when confronted about it...

Are you a surgeon? #### sakes I don't even get payed that much an hour!!!!
You are paid salary. On days you DO make that an hour, and much more so. Some days include PT, coffee at Tims, and getting to go home. Lets not kid ourselves, the military is goochie for the fact that your guaranteed a paycheque, regardless of how little you do.
There are days when you earn your keep, but they are few and far between... coming from an ex-military member.

Electrician, 20 min $ 150. Vet, 15 min $ 175. Quote to move a lathe 5 km : 2 men, min. 4 hours, + truck yabba yabba $ 800. Got the local towing company to do it with a flat bed, 60 min. $ 200 with tip.

I quit the security business years ago because the pi$$ a$$ $80/hr we were charging ended up trickling down to crap salaries and benefits with no future.

Btw, how much do you think a pro should charge for a job that requires specialized tools and knowledge, + overhead ?
