CSA VZ 58 , CZ 58 , CZ 858, VZ 58 ... whats the difference really?

As I understand it:
Vz-58 - original military version manufactured by Ceska Zbrojovka, several versions, capable of fully automatic operation.
Cz-858 - semi auto version manufactured using surplus military components.
CSA Vz-58 Sporter - semi auto version manufactured from new components by Czech Small Arms.

The difference is if you buy a VZ58 on the 29th of July 2013 it goes to the RCMP lab for verification of it to converted auto and it sits there. Still have it got it back.

When I think about "the lab", why do I envision the warehouse of artifacts, at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark?

What is the lineage of those FSN rifles that Marstar has been sold out of for 2 years?

Edit : nm. Google was my friend

All I know is ,when all this BS hit the fan after being away from this forum for a while ,I looked at my beloved 858 and was almost afraid to check the numbers ,took awhile to take it down and break out the magnifying lens.

I held my breath and checked the date stamped in the window........

.....`06......BOOM......MINE.......for now !!

I bought that beauty from Wolverine when they first started coming on the market.

What a sad state of affairs this truly is !! I feel sorry for the folks who have the later dated models, amnesty or not.

CZ 858 was build from military grade parts. CSA VZ 58 it is pure civilian. Quality to the eye I vote CSA VZ 58 Quality and endurance in operation my vote goes to my castrated CZ 858

I'd like to compare the 2 live and see for myself just what the differences are between military and civilian.

By the Komodo, the RCMP "lab" is a smelter. Your gun is probably on death row to be smelted if it hasn't been already.

CZ 858 has welds in the reciever for auto parts that at one time were commonly available and no place to fit them easily and contrary to what the RCMP say! also made with military surplus parts

CSA all new manufacture and much cleaner finish. All and all same thing as CZ 858 with a few reliability issues in 2013 due to over gassing. My CSA was one of them with 3 trips to the Warranty department. Since the last visit I have put over 1000 rounds with virtually no issues except when trying to use non-factory mags. I find the CSA feed ramp the main cause of this issue. Stick to factory mags and for me a non issue.

I've had a very good look at these lately. The differences that immediately come to mind are that many of the 858's were built using modified select fire receivers as used by the military. They had a couple of small steel blocks welded to the inside of the receiver in specific areas to prevent the installation of certain original unmodified trigger parts. They also appear to have been remarked by the factory. If you've seen one with the original Military markings you'll see the difference.

The CSA or VZ58 has a new commercially manufactured receiver that is machined in such a way that the select fire trigger parts cannot be installed. All other parts ie. barrel, bolt, bolt carrier etc. appear to be the same. Most of the CSA VZ 58's I've seen lately come with the mod to the bolt carrier to prevent the dreaded "Gremlin".

Other than different Stocking options, the only other main difference is in how the safety operates. On the VZ858, the tail of the safety faces the shooter in the firing position, and is pushed downward and forward from the rear to engage Safe. The VZ58 has the tail facing forward in the firing position, and is pulled downward and back to engage Safe.

The other main difference is the price. The VZ858's were around $700.00 the VZ58's are around $1000.00.

The VZ58 was a converted auto 12.3. If it has not been verified by the RCMP as being converted auto they won't do a transfer without examining it. I bought it on the 29th of July 2013 and it was sent to the RCMP on the 5th of October 2013. They still have not finished their examination probably haven't even started it. This is common it can take up to 18 months for one of these exams. It's a 12.3 thing
