Possibility of a Norinco AR180b

Depends. If it was machine from aluminum it would be far more cost effective than making it stamped steel which is extremely expensive.

However this topic has been beaten to death before.

Stamped steel more expensive than forged and machined aluminum? The whole design of the rifle was that Stoner wanted to make an AR15 like rifle that was easier and CHEAPER to produce than the rather complicated manufacturing processes that the AR15 required. So became the CHEAPER and less complex AR18 from which the semi-auto AR180 and AR180B derived.

In the states we have been bugging the Armalite company to bring back the AR180 in aluminum or the original stamped steel but have only received lip service. They are too busy selling AR15 lineup to bother with it I guess. Even a steel liner for the polymer receiver would have been a big improvement and solved the weak hinge problem. I may be mistaken but I do believe that Armalite still retains the rights to the AR180 design. Not that it matters to China.

What about this? http://masterpiecearms.com/shop/mpar-556-rifle/ copy of the Leader Dynamics T2 Mk5.

Go price out making dies to manufacture a limited market rifle for Canada and you will answer your own question. I am in a business that manufactures and know what it costs.

And remember any military style firearm made in Canada can not be sold down south for civilian sales. So your talking about spending ridiculous amounts of money on dies to make stamped steel rifles for our small market.

I'm really surprised the AR-180 didn't end up on the banned list.

Considering that the Uzi 9mm and the Franchi Spas both got banned. All thanks to The Terminator.

Even if it only shares the look but has a different redesigned semiautomatic lower? Anything is possible with the RCMP but we have ARs and they're not prohib even though they have a fully - automatic counterpart.

A lot of firearms are prohibited by name alone, not because they have a fully automatic third cousin.

EDIT: Here's a list of firearms prohibited by name and the law surrounding it in an easy to read format: http://www.firearms-safety-course.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=17&Itemid=23

Knowing what the law is will serve you greatly as a Canadian firearms owner, so I do suggest you give it a read.

I'm not ignorant of the law. The AR 180 is prohibited by name correct? If you don't think it will work then just say that, sorry for derailing the thread with my suggestion of a non restricted fn fal lookalike in 5.56 and .308. Of course it would have a different name.

I'm not ignorant of the law.... Of course it would have a different name.

I'm sorry, but yes, you are ignorant of the law. You need to brush up a bit.

Just because you make an FAL and call it something else, doesn't make it something else. It's still an FAL variant, and is therefore prohibited.

The firearm of the design commonly known as the FN-FAL (FN-LAR) rifle, and any variant or modified version of it, including the FN 308 Model 44, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Competition Auto, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Heavy Barrel 308 Match, FN-FAL (FN-LAR) Paratrooper 308 Match 50-64 and FN 308 Model 50-63.

Think about it. You're not the first to think about that stuff. Don't you think we'd already have FALs, G3, and MAC-10 variants if all it took was calling it a different name?

It really comes down to semantics. And a RCMP decision which can easily go either way.
A big gamble if you're investing huge time and money into a project.

Look at the new rifle being made in Alberta. It was deemed to not be an AR-15 variant.

Meanwhile the Akdal shotgun was deemed to be an AR-15 variant.

Go figure?
