Is it legal in Canada to build your own personal private handgun shooting space say in your basement of your home or underground if it was built properly, sound-proofed, ventilated, etc?

As far as I know, you have to inform and be approved by your provincial CFO. Not sure about municipal compliance which I'm going to assume you need approval from city council even though it's indoors.

When I retire I'm going to try.....a couple steel shipping containers, bury them underground, double as a bunker lol.
3 feet of dirt on it, won't hear ####...

Containers are not designed to have wieght acorss their entire length so thats a bad idea. They are designed to take weight on their corners only.

I'm sure just a foot of dirt will do nicely.

To the OP, most people just go ahead and shoot (illegally) in their basements or root cellars. What "they" don't know won't hurt them:)

Perhaps, but they are easily reinforced with some steel and a decent welder. There are also companies out there that make custom shipping containers for whatever the heck you want, generally sold for storage purposes but if you wanna pay for it, they'll make you whatever you want. Even install it on site, so if you drew up plans for something that was 2 containers wide, and two containers long, you could easily have it all welded up into one single "room" with support pillars and beams where necessary.

It cannot be in your house and you have to not only be approved by your Provincial CFO but also the Provincial and Federal government. The back stops, ventilation, sound proofing and the rest of the bullet proofing you need to do will cost you a small to large fortune.

Savage said it best!

So it's possible then, excellent. Does anybody know anyone who has one?
