This is quite possibly the most beautiful gun I've ever seen

Some interesting info from another collector on what's rare in the Snake world.

Serpentine set is the rarest "set" to my knowledge at 50 sets. In order of rarity my research has come up with the than Carol Wilkerson 3" SS and 3" nickel (20 or less of each). There are 26 nickel cali combats made. In terms of roll marks, 100 cased sets of boas (1200 boas in total though), 200 stalkers, 200 call combats in blue, 226 nickel python targets... (251-26 that became nickel cali combats =226 remaining), 250 silver Snake, 250 python 10 pointers, and 250 python silhouettes. 1000 grizzlies, combat cobras, Snake eyes (500 in each finish). 2000 Kodiak. There are some rarer birds out there, but not unique roll mark.... 5" anaconda..... Heck even the 3" pythons aren't unique in terms of roll mark.

Of course don't forget single digit S/N Pythons, those would cause a big headache to the CFO for registration, believe me. When I had my 1957 Python re-registered, their system showed 27 other Colts with that serial number, so I had to educate them on the Python history and they approved it on the spot.

One day I will own a 5" Anaconda!! According to knowledgeable dealers and collectors there are less than 150. I've seen them come up for sale in the US on occasion for $6-7K

Good day.

How does one tell if the grips on their Python are original? Or can you?

I have a Diamondback and the grips move a bit - really slight but you can feel it. I was told everything on the gun is original but once I had it in my hand.... Well I'm not sure.

Thanks

For Pythons, by the serial number (date of birth) and pictures.

I don't know much about DB but if you post pictures with gun and both sides of grips, someone will tell you if they are original Colts or cheap copies.

OK

I was thinking more like - can you tell if someone bought a gun with a different set of grips (say Pachmayr ) and then put other colt (in this case DB) grips on it.

I got to be honest, as beautiful as these revolvers are, an old smith has just as much class. 3000 to 5000 is retarded. Ill never pay that unless in win the lottery.

You might feel different if you held them side by side. It's like driving an Oldsmobile, then a Cadillac.
Sure, both will get you from a to b. One just feels better.
There's no comparison between the two, and they arent making these anymore, so the supply is limited to what is out there.
The price is only limited to what someone will pay for it.
I probably will never have one again.
They were sure nice to have when I did though. Beautiful things they are.

a mint 27 or 29 is no oldsmobile. but if you got the funds have at it.

So it's just a question of how much money is in your pocket then! I have to agree that some models of old S&W are also beautiful revolvers.
By the way, what would you expect to pay for LNIB a nickel 5" Model 27 or a nickel 6.5" Model 29 or a 1989 Model 627 ?
Don't expect to find one for less than $1500 and expect to pay as much as $2K.
