>>> I am not looking for rifle bashing - or ##### sessions <<<<

I am asking for honest perspectives and experiences, should I ditch my SKS and pick up an XCR-L to shoot that wonderfully cheap 7.62x39 ?

The SKS does a great job for a $200 rifle, but I won't hunt with it & sort-of getting tired of the Iron sights. I put a POSP scope on mine and it's 'OK' but not really something to get serious target shooting with.

SO...

I already have hunting rifles - don't need an XCR for the bush (but I like the non-restricted angle of it). Is the XCR-L WORTH the $$ money $$ ? I have heard good things about the XCR-L but it seems the rifles are always being sold on the equipment exchange - is that because people don't like them much or they're too heavy ? Or maybe the people that buy them are the "Oh Look a New Toy!!" crowd that buy-sell-buy something different ?

So - ditch the SKS and spend $$$$ or just stick with the plinker for the Cheap cost ? Does anyone have an XCR that they just LOVE ?.... TELL ME !!

If you're shooting at the range, and want to stick with the 7.62*39, why not just get an AR like the Armalite or NEA? Half the price of an XCR (ish) and all the bang.

My buddy has an XCR-L .223 and loves it. So do I, lol. One of the nicest guns I have seen and shot. He has the newer version with a lite barrel and keymod forend and it is more than light enough. Can't speak for the x39, but IMO, if I could afford it, I would definitely pick one up over the ACR or any other NR tactical style gun.

If you've got the coin to toss at the XCR, go for it! With the 10 round pistol mags out there, you can get a whole lot more gun into your gun. Just make sure to keep a bottle of loc-tite handy... :stirthepot2:

My first XCR left a bad taste in my mount. Never again.

I say get the XCR and see how you like it!

Why ditch the sks? Keep it and buy a xcr! Another great thing is you can buy multiple calibers fir the xcr.

Honestly I would say go with a CSA VZ 58. It's about $1050, can have chrome lined barrel or non, is extremely accurate, has a nice trigger, (especially when compared to the sks) and is super duper reliable. I have a military folding stock on mine, but they come with the "ar" style stocks now. You can also get original wood stocks for them if you like that sort of thing. I was also thinking of getting an xcr-l, but honestly for the money you can't really justify buying that firearm given the price, the weight of the darn thing, (even if it's a keymod, and the vz is about 6.5 pounds) and when you compare an xcr-l to a vz 58 for capabilities, I fail to see where you need to spend another $1300 or so on a gun. Unless ar ergos are worth that much to you.

No rifle will really be "target" in 7.62x39. The cheap bulk stuff won't come close

Ruger makes the Mini-30, in that caliber, inexpensive I think. And newer ones are decent accuracy. With reloads and quality components.

BUT...

The bullet is too heavy and too slow to have a good trajectory past 300m... at that point its dropping like a stone.

If "target" is what you want, you will probably be looking at a different cartridge in a different rifle.

Vz58 in 762x39 are fun and good. And decent accuracy for that cartridge. But Vz in 556 will be more "target"

Maybe consider a Norc M-14. Some arent accurate. Some are decent. Parts are interchangeable with US made parts. Some can really perform. But the cartridge is .308win, plenty good for "target", plenty good for hunting most animals.

Get the XCR, you will not regret it or be disappointed with it. My XCR gives me honest 2.5" groups with cheap corrosive surplus x39 ammo @ 100m. All day, every day. Commercial hunting ammo is slightly better but not enough to justify the added cost.
