Reloading 30-30

I chronographed the 36.3 grains of LVR that Hodgdon's show as their maximum load. They show 2332, while mine came out at 2260, which is far and away better than any of their loadings with other powders.
 
My Hornady 8 ed. book list 37 grains LVR as the max for the 160 FTX bullet, hoddgon list 35.5 max. I worked up to 37 and that chrony'd at 2380, book says 2300.:runaway: 36 put me right on 2300. Quite impressive powder for a 30-30 over the others.

That max load is certainly getting up there! Wonder what barrel length that was taken with and would I get close to that out of my 18" barrel?
 
Almost all the velocity figures given in modern loading manuals are inflated.
If you have a barrel four feet long and get within 100 fps of the manual figures you are doing great.
 
I've always used 3031, but have switched to LVR... getting very consistent, accurate results, all with better velocity. I'm using 38.0 LVR with 150's and 35.0 LVR with the 160 FTX.
 
I have practically switched everything over to LVR in my 30-30 rifles. [a Marlin and 2 - 94's]

With one exception, it is the most accurate powder I have used in them. [My Marlin actually shoots the Speer 170 FN into under 1 moa, using WC755 powder]

Without exception, LVR gives the highest velocity with 150 - 170 grain pills.

You fellas should really consider thinking a little bit outside the box.

A pussy cat in the recoil department, still with enough juice for off season coyotes:

27.1 gr IMR4198
110 gr SP meant for the M1 carbine.
Velocity will be just north of 2500 fps.

Load this one round in the magazine only and very carefully, one up the spout for a two shot repeater.
The bullet impact with be an inch or two higher versus regular deer bullet sight in at the distance of 100 yards.
Ladies and youth find this to be a very comfortable learning load in 30-30 lever rifles.

This comes right from Pet Loads by Ken Waters. Works just fine in my M94 Winchester.

When your using under 10 grains of powder and bought powder before the prices hit the space shuttle his math adds up.
Even with today's prices my powder charge for my 3030 is only 4.5 cents

At ten grains per load that works out to 5.60 a pound and at 4
5 cents per round that works out to 31.50 a pound. At today's prices 50 dollars a pound it is a lot closer to 7 cents a round and at 35 grain loads 25 cents per load.

There's a reloading calculator in the google play store that does all the math for you.

My 30-30 plinkers are $.26/round. Less if you subtract the 1000 free primers I have been using.
