If you've never seen one before.... Generated for the Department of Energy by Colt back in the late 80's and early 90's as the need grew to use environment friendly *overpenetration Im sure would be an issue* firearms to defend Nuclear Facilities.

If you've never had a chance to try one *in semi auto trim of course....let me tell you.....pure joy on a stick! ;)

The 9mm cartridge flies from this platform with surprising accuracy and the diminished weight and improved handling characteristics make it an incredible winner at the range.

That and the reduced costs connected to shooting a firearm in this caliber make it a very sensible choice for those that want an economical way to have a blast as well precluding the need to learn the control systems of a new platform.

If you get an opportunity DON'T PASS on this one.

Good luck finding a DOE upper !

$2000.00 for the upper alone, those are collector item and highly sought down south.

.

The originals are quite collectible....they only made 2000 of them and 1500 went to the Dept of Energy.....approximately 300 to Law Enforcement Agencies....and about 200 into the civilian commercial market.

The originals seem to be running in the $2000 range as just an upper.

But I had an upper built for half that cost. *Still using a Colt Upper, but with aftermarket improved barrel and handguards.

The originals handgrips are notoriously thin, but the aftermarket ones are SOLID.

Stripped lowers are available as well.

I can't say enough about how versatile and fun it is to shoot in the economical 9mm

My girl won't stop shooting this one I imported up through IRUNGUNS a few months ago.....and DOE is even handier. ;)

I realize that isn't the DOE....I just posted that pic to put forward the idea of the Carbine as an alternative platform to a full sized unit.

Its not something that people think of often enough yet.

That one is Nevada State Police Trade in upper that I procured and had assembled. AND ITS A RIOT! :)

We can't all afford original product. :) But I love the idea that I can build something that looks and runs JUST LIKE THE REAL DEAL. ;)

The pics at the top of the post are from the internet.....the last one is the one I bought my girl for her birthday. She LOVES this thing and so do I.

The DOE is the next logical step in evolution for shorter, handier, righteously fun carbine shooting.

Colt Upper and match grade barrel....stronger handguards and half the price of an original.... who wouldn't want one of these things!!?!?

Im sold.

Just sharing to see what peoples thoughts are.

PS KANOOK.....Awsome OLD SCHOOL PIC!!!! ;)

finally someone that remembers a time when photos came on paper.

Yes the 9mm ARs are great shooters. Very pleased with my Colt 6450.

I know a gentleman down south that manufactures replica DOE barrels, front sights, handguards, etc. but he let his ITAR paperwork lapse and cannot export. Perhaps he could be persuaded to renew if there was enough interest.

I have some interesting news.

I spoke with my contact in the States who makes the DOE replica barrel assemblies and he is willing to renew his DoS ITAR registration for the year if there is sufficient interest for a reasonably small run, say 60-100 units. Estimated landed cost would be $350-400 USD which includes the barrel, front sight assembly, handguards, and barrel nut; everything forward of the receiver.

This thread should be moved to the Black Rifles forum where it will get the correct exposure.

I agree.

Now do I move this thread in its entirety somehow? Or just start over with the same topic.

Sorry if I sound less than tech savvy Its not something I have done before.

as for your friend down south.

Im IN.

You won't move the thread, either a Moderator can move it if they see the comments or contact a Mod and ask it be moved to the Black Rifles section.

I'm in for 2 if it can happen

Gryphon energetics.... you just made my week with that last comment! Lmao! Awesome

As for the integrally suppressed model....sigh* if only they were legal.....I wouldnt be going deaf so fast.

Too bad the rest of the civilized nations have some form of legal ownership and we cant.

It would mean less noise pollution and ultimately less hearing damage.
