Obscured serial #'s in EE ads

As many have stated, there ''may'' be no harm in sharing abundant info online, but there is even less harm keeping as much information private.
The internet is quite the public place, many cautions need to be taken as to what you write and what you share about yourself.
So by your logic you would feel safe posting your license plate number here?

Never been overly concerned about personal info myself. But not an issue to me if someone else is.

So ghost guns can't appear with your serial #

^ This. If someone were to use a firearm in the commission of a crime and ditch it, it would be advantageous if said criminal could replicate another known serial # to throw the officials on a wild goose chase. (if for even a while. { I wouldn't imagine it would take more than a day contacting the proper owner of the serial # to figure out what has gone on.})

Alright, here's my story. Last summer, I was woken up from my sleep because the cops wanted to ask me some questions. Turns out my 15 year old license plate was used in a robbery/burglary type crime. The dealer I dealt with did not bother to dispose my license plate (I did a trade-in with new plates installed) and most likely passed it off to the criminal underworld. Do I want the same thing happen again - this time involving firearms? OH HELL NAWWW!

Bit different someone having the physical plate than seeing it.

also on my above comment mine are all non restricted so I literally can't think of a issue that could arise.

You are right, but someone can easily steal my firearm serial number and electro pencil it on a ghost gun (as someone already stated). Do I have anything to hide? Nope. Do I want to be woken up again in the middle of the night to be asked questions about my firearms? Nope.

You guys think to much. In all my years I've never heard of such a thing happening. Not saying that it couldn't, but you are giving the criminal mind way to much credit. In my experience, most don't even bother with removing the original serial number much less mark the gun with another. They know the firearm is stolen and it's an offense just to posses it. Having a different serial isn't going to aid them in any way when they are robbing the local 7-11.
The most popular mod is to saw the barrel off and wrap it in many layers of tape. And if it's a handgun just wrap it in sticky electrical tape. Now if someone can tell me why they apply tape this could solve a great mystery.

Who said its because of the criminal mind?

I'm somewhat more concerned with the dossier-building types mining data here.

It's all fun and games until you get a knock on the door by the leo investigating why your pal was used to acquire illegal arms and/or your gun was in a crime. You protect your credit cards, bank cards, passport info, drivers license. Pal and serial numbers are no different.
