Don't know what could happen, don't want to find out.
Exactly.
There are some very creative people out there who can (and will) dream up nefarious things that could potentially lead to trouble.
Don't know what could happen, don't want to find out.
Makes no sense.
I have never seen a stolen firearm with a legit guns serial implanted on it. Not saying that it couldn't be done, just that there is no sense in doing so.
Nobody is going to come banging on your door in the middle of the night (as a previous poster suggested) asking if you knew your RPAL or a serial number from one of your guns was used in an offence.
When I have a stolen gun on my desk, the people in our organization that search it work days. And the database is a daytime thing also. I have yet a search to come back within 3 days. If then it comes up to you, I'd call you during the daytime because I work, you guessed it, days.
Nearly all the guns used in offences are stolen. Nearly all that I have seen have the serials intact but some are ground off. It makes no difference to the criminal using the gun whether it has a serial number or not. And they sure aren't going to go through the trouble of browsing the internet and finding the same gun and try to put this serial on the stolen gun which they can't possess anyway.
Again, if someone knows of any case that had a firearm used in an offence that had the serial removed and a different serial put on by the criminal using it, please post the story. I'd be very interested in reading and sharing this information.
You seem to be a LEO of some description, so although I don't have any documented proof of anything like this happening, indulge me. As a LEO you're called to a homicide. It would appear Bruno the local crime potentate has been shot execution style with 3 .22 caliber rounds to the head. Bruno's wife found him and called the Police. The gun, without finger prints present is found at the scene in close proximity to Bruno's body, it is fully loaded less the 3 rounds now inside our friend Bruno.
As a Leo, you know Bruno has been up to no good, you suspect an organized type "hit" but you interview the wife first (doubting she has anything to do with it...but you must rule her out.) Then the gun...guess what, according to the serial # it's mine!? Who are you going to want to talk to next?
I can show you the same make and model with identical serial # in my lock up, and my lawyer tells me it is not in my best interest to provide you with any more information. So I don't. You ask me where I was on the night Bruno met his end and you get nothing (because I'm going to listen to my lawyer, not you. No disrespect intended).
Do I sit in jail under suspicion of murder until you figure out how two identical guns came to be? How long does that take? What if there is ultimately no clear answer as to who's gun shot Bruno, I'm now the only suspect you have with a link to the crime...you have files to clear/close right?
My guess is I'm charged with the shrug of a shoulder and a "let the courts sort it out". Right?
I won't take the chance thanks.
My question would be why wouldn't you obscure it
If you post your guns' serial numbers, the RCMP can prove beyond a reasonable doubt the association between your CGN name and everything you have ever posted and your specific firearms. Is that good enough reason to obscure the serial numbers? I dunno.

Your guessing wrong. There is no way that gun will get though the lab as an original. No way.
As far as yourself goes. You seem to know the law. Where is the R&P grounds? There isn't any.
If this myth became reality you may be called. Lots of people kill themselves with guns that do not belong to them. Lots of people. I ordered the destruction of a beautiful S&W model 17 a few months ago from a similar situation. Gun was stolen so long ago there were no longer any contacts.
If someone wants to kill another person with a gun that doesn't belong to them, and can get away with it. What advantage do they gain by somehow grinding off the original serial, building up with metal soft enough to stamp ( and wire welding isnt) Then stamp it in a way and re blue it so its the same as the many examples the lab has for comparison plus pass an inspection under glass for tool marks.
Why do this when he doesn't have to do anything?
Conspiracy theories are fine on paper but they make little sense in reality.
You're missing the point. while all this lab test stuff is going on, my innocent tail is in the county lock up.
