Mercedes Diesel G Wagon

If looking for a woods car, why not look at hummer H3, of course not as good as a diesel but the H3 base models are going pretty cheap. Awd and I loved mine. I had an H3 alpha (full options and a v8 instead of crappy 5cyl). Put mine in a ton of mud, snow, water up to the hood and worked super good. I upgraded to an H2, and can tell you for off road H3 was waaaaaay better.

Yes I drive a hummer and yes my licence plate is COMPNS8

Haha, just kidding. I've always wanted an HMMWV since I drove one in the states on ex, but it'd be way too big for local trails.

If the LSVW ever gets surplussed for the right price, I'd love to grab one of those. I know, they're $hit on the road and it takes forever to get up to 100km/hr, but they're great off-road vehicles.

Mechanical diesel, as long as the fuel selionid is open all ya need And lockers all around. I assume you meaning like a 280 gwagon and not the newer 500 series. I was looking at one.

nailed it " lockers" is what your looking for , some G wagons have front ,rear, and t case lockers.will climb a tree almost. Save a lot of money, buy an older Toyota Land Cruiser G (diesel) in the 60 series - station wagon - put lockers in it and never worry about beatin the p*ss outa her.Incredibly reliable and capable off road, also a lot easier to find. Or get a 97-99 jeep cherokee and lock that .Just make sure you get Chrysler 8.25 rear and dana HP 30 front axles. No dana 35 rear and low pinion front ,No diesel though.

I've a plain jane H3 and I love it. Gutless torque wise; but it's a manual 5 speed so you feather the clutch, run the rev's up good and bang the next gear.
Get's 21 mpg ( canadian gallons...no heads up display, so I just calc the mileage by hand) highway mileage too. But only at the speed limit, push it and cut the mileage in half.
And they are cheap now.

Sorry lost me at Jeep.

jeep is either really good or really bad and its the axles that make it . the H.O. 4 ltr inline 6 is fantastic , makes all its power at low rpm ,great torque. but you really have to do your home work and know what axles you have. The Cherokee is a fantastic vehicle -if you get the right one

Yes except I live in NS, so that Cherokee unibody will be swiss cheese in 2 years.

I see the ads for the Ram with a small diesel engine. V6, I think. With the shortest wheelbase possible, manual trans and 4 wd, would this be a good truck?

My only past experience with a Chyrsler product was bad.

Unless you are absolutely sold on diesel, get the gas, it is cheaper. I am a diesel fan, but the diesel never gets paid off unless you run huge mileage.

I'm not sure of this engine platform; but the older Mercedes diesels, from the sedans and such?
The same as the engines that were in farm implements!
Acquaintance had one for travelling around working 'Patch, I asked him if he was crazy...yeah, like a fox. Every small podunk town in Southern Sask had engine components, starters and such...cheap too.

That's the engine. It's called the 617, or 616. 617 had 5 cylinders, and the 616 had 4 cylinders... Yep, they're from the sedans, and the tractors. it's a really tough engine. Many go to well over a million miles with new head gaskets, and other basic parts...

I am pretty sure most of this guy's stock are Gas models, but they are in excellent shape. I bought my 710M Pinzgauer from him. 24v, lockers etc
