Buy Canadian AR

So far the Canadian builders have not stepped up with a superior product, or an affordable one, couple that with our small consumer base and we will never have a large scale Canadian builder. ATR's stuff look promising but so far we just have his word on how great these will be..not exactly a stellar endorsement yet. Dlask may have the capability to pump out sufficient amounts of lowers, but without a steady reliable supply of barrels, uppers and components they are in the same boat as the rest, production capibility but no parts. ITAR and endless brain dead legislation from US DOS is what killed the Canadian firearms industry. A few overpriced muzzle breaks and lowers are not going to change that, nor will a lack of QC .
There is no way as stated several times that a Canadian company will ever be able to compete with the big exporters, who do not have to play by the same screwed up regulations in Canada.

I would just like to add a little info to this debate about canadian made AR'S. We have been working with Rick since november developing new AR products. The AR lowers are nearing completion and our muzzle breaks are fully tested and available to the public. We have also made rock creek 1/7 twist barrels in 10.5", 11.5",14." , and 18" SPR. These will be tested and proven befor they are available to the public.
We have worked as machinest for over a decade making parts with tolerences beyond most peoples understanding so our QC is not an issue. Concidering that we only started the AR project 4 months ago I think we are doing very well. We want to supply canadians with a great product,so it would be nice if we had your support.
Thank You.

This is true and we are NOT trying to compete on a volume or price point as we will loose that 1 instantly.

Quality here is NUMERO UNO!! Price is important but we are catering to the guys who want something exceptional, and unique. If a milspec item or a Norc is what you want we can not help you.

The barrels just mentioned are yet another example of where our heads are at.
Rock Creek or Lilja stainless matchgrade barrel blanks are several steps up from anything milspec.
Our barrels will only be sold as custom, so chambers are cut to what the client wants, 223, 556 or 223Wilde, possibly even 223AI, we will need the individuals upper so as to headspace the chambers correctly, as well as to ensure that the upper functions.
Again the market for this is small, but for those who want something better than milspec 1 size fits all, we are an option.

When I finally get an AR, I will be giving you call :D. (just need to find a range)

Rick, While checking out your links I noticed that Lilja is now offering drop -in AR barrels. Is this a product that you are able to import, or do the US export restriction Nazi's have their hand in this tempting pie? You noted you will be offering 1/7 twist barrels and Lilja's site state theirs are 1/8 twist. I imagine the blanks are easier for you to import, and then we aren't saddled with paying for some of their mandated machining that we may opt to cut off, such as pinned barrel extensions and the like. Is this it in a nutshell?

The Lilja barrels we have are 8 twist.
Like all AR barrels regardless of make the State Dept has decreed that 16" and non threaded muzzles is all we can get permits to export.
So drop ins are available, just not necessarily in a sought after length.
By importing blanks we can make them whatever configuration we want as OUR government does not at this time have any problem with evil brakes, flash hiders or shorter barrels:rolleyes:
We may at some point make generic milspec barrels but for now we prefer high quality rather than knocking heads with the "everything must be cheap" mentality. It is not where we want to be in the market.

True Milspec is not cheap and will hold up much longer than a custom barrel,if you are going with an unlined barrel in anything but a 1/7 twist you can count me out. My rifles are used a lot as are others here, considered a tool not a precision instrument (although must be consistent and accurate with their specs). An unlined barrel doesn't cut it as far as I'm concerned.YMMV

It would be a excellent idea to offer 1/7 barrels with the following features.

  • 5.56 Nato chamber
  • Mil-Spec 11595 - 4150 Grade Barrel Steel
  • Chrome Lined Bore and Chamber
  • Manganese Phosphate Finish
  • F-Marked Forged Front Sights
  • Government Profile
  • HPT (High Pressure Test)
  • MPI (Magnetic Particle Inspected)

Start with 14.5" once they start selling offer 16", 10.5" Etc.

There are non-chrome lined barrels that will take the abuse (Pac-nor Noveske) but generally the barrels with features listed above are for high round carbeans :)

+1 from me

The 1 in 7 is also happening, the milspec, the chrome lined, the sights are not.
1 can not buy barrel blanks that are chome lined, this is done AFTER the chamber is cut.
I agree that chrome lined barrels will last longer in spray and pray mode or under heavy use than a match stainless will, however to try and solve the supply problem of shorter or SPR type barrels we are trying to be of help by offering what IS available to us.

Not sure where post went

I lost track of this post after about the first 6 pages but I will say that I have owned many Norinco's, and I had carried a C8 for many years and put almost twenty thousand rounds down the barrell and there was no comparison between the quality of that weapon and a Norinco. My C8 only ever failed due to operator error, the Diemaco (Colt Canada) product is truley a different breed. I would only hope that a Canadian built, pubilcly available AR could be produced to the same quality. It will cost more but the over all quality would probably reflect it.

Norinco's are attractive in price, but you truley get what you pay for.

I was speaking to a few People at "Colt Canada" and they didn't even know that you could buy an AR in Canada. Someone should inform them to start selling to the private market, but I think they are barred from doing that due to legal reason from Ottawa. If I remember correctly it has something to do with the original deal between Colt and Diemaco years back.

I just caught up on the thread, missed the whole Diemaco section.
