Is Coyote hunting with 10 rnd Mags legal?

I called MNR and they told me if the mag is exempted from the law you can us it for hunting. Call the RCMP…waist of my breath and time. But the RCMP did tell say "the only mag restrictions are for waterfowl hunting in your shotgun". After that conversation my buddy and I were wondering if that means you can have more that 2 in a shotgun when you hunting other game.

Yes in Ontario shotguns are 2 plus one for everything.

I would say no...
"You must plug a semi-automatic or repeating shotgun so that it will not hold more than a total of three shells in the chamber and magazine combined." Pg 25 for the Ontario hunting reg.
but its early, maybe i missed something somewhere lol

That is for shotgun. Center fire rifle is not restricted under hunting regs, but under federal law.

ps- screw the LAR mag I'm getting a Beuwulf mag!

Don't buy the $50 plastic ones (pvc) they suck.
Spend the $80 and get the metal AA ones

The 5/10 ones are riveted perfect, but the 5/7 rounds ones I've bought are riveted a little short and drilled on the wrong side (back side binds the spring)

I've read through all these posts and wonder how many people Actually shoot coyotes?

I go coyote shooting out to the farm just about every weekend possible and its been many years since I've been able to fire off 4 rounds at once. After the first shot, every next round is a running shot.

I suppose it is hypothetically possible to need 10 rounds for shooting dogs, but I have serious doubts. I don't use 5 rounds in a day, and in fact I prefer the low profile of the 5 round mag.

Well I do, I got #36 for the year last Saturday.

Drifting down a river shooting at a running coyote. I'll be honest, it took more than 5 to track it.

I use a Benelli and Beo mags.

Usually one shot is all I need if one is standing there.....but then sometimes there's more than 1 to shoot at, and after the first shot everything is running. Then it's nice to have more on tap.

I don't always hit them on the first shot when they're running, but they almost never get away either.

I can honestly say I have never hunted coyotes from a boat before. It must add a little to the challenge. I got to agree with the other guy follow up shots don't happen that much for me either. I think all of the shots I have taken this year have been running shots. Haven't missed one yet but haven't shot near as many as you either.

If that 10 rnd. LAR pistol mag is going into any kind of AR, no. No hunting with restricted firearms. Ontario's MNR follows the FA for firearm rules.
In southern Ontario, the only restriction is NOT in ALL of Southern Ontario. Isn't .275 max everywhere either. Some municipalities near TO(Durham Region is one, I think. It's in their by-laws.) say .270 max. By cartridge name. You have to check local by-laws too.

Nope. Around orillia you can hunt yotes with whatever you like as long as it it legal to shoot it outside of a range.

Download the Ontario hunting reg booklet. read carefully.... and you should find the answers you seek....
Fallow Canadian firearms laws and Hunting regs for your area
I have it downloaded to my phone. Comes in handy.

And yes, some areas have by-laws you have to pay attention to as well.

"Firearms If you are hunting small game in an area where there is an open season for deer, moose, elk, or black bear, you may not possess or use a rifle of greater muzzle energy than 400 foot-pounds or shells loaded with ball or with shot larger than No. 2 shot (non-toxic equivalents include steel shot larger than triple BBB, or bismuth larger than double BB), unless you possess a valid licence to hunt deer, moose, elk or black bear as the case may be. This restriction does not apply south of the French and Mattawa Rivers during an open season for deer that is restricted to the use of bows. A person hunting small game may not carry or use a rifle of greater calibre than a .275-calibre rifle, except a muzzleloading gun, in the geographic areas of Brant, Chatham-Kent, Durham, Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Halton, Hamilton, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Niagara, Norfolk, Northumberland, Oxford, Peel, Perth, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington or York"

Don't mean to keep posting this pic but it does show what is legal here in BC.

XCR-L in 223 mag is a 10 round LAR15 pistol mag I use Robinson Arms 10 round 7.62X39 pistol mags to load 11 rounds of 6.8spc when I have my 6.8spc upper on.

Holy sweet jesus how the hell is this thread still going?

I can take my Lee Enfield 303 Brit with its ten round magazine out and hunt coyotes all I want. End of thread. There is NOTHING in the Ontario hunting regulations that restricts rifles beyond what we are allowed to possess federally.

You may want to go back and read that again. Anything over. 270 south of orangeville(hwy 9) is nit allowed. And yes it is in the hunting regulations. As has been posted.

The mag capacity for centre fire rifles is federaly controlled though so using a pistol mag is perfectly fine.

Thats a calibre restriction. Not a magazine restriction. Lee Enfield 303 was simply the example I chose because its a rather obvious one that most of us are familiar with. It proves the point that 10 round magazines are legal to hunt with. Calibre restrictions would obviously limit its use in southern ON, but thats not what the thread is about

Most of us new what you meant.
