BROKEN REM 700 Bolt!

I always tig weld the handles on any of the guns I build, that way you can set the timing and extraction cam for the correct contact.
I will add I have never broken a bolt handle off. The ones I tig weld on are new ptg bolt and handle setups

These things happen??? Really lol. That would be most people's reason to never buy remington again. If something like a freaking bolt broke I would break the rifle in half and ship it back to remington and ask them if they can take the trash out for me.

True. Big difference between things going wrong on the range, and when you are in the middle of a hunt etc. Still a not unheard of failure, and likewise I have seen it on older guns as well, including a 600. Easy to fix though, not to mention you can add in the screw (screws) that was all the rage a few years back in the US for tactical guns.

If gravel is willing to help you out then take it and report back ;) it sucks and it wouldn't happen if Remington welded the parts together but it's rare and it's still a solid gun. It is an issue that Remington should cover for life as far as I'm concerned. I suspect gravel suggested a local guy because it's such an easy fix that you could have it fixed the same day as opposed to sending it away and waiting several weeks. If you have someone local they could fix it in about 20 minutes!

I have an sps varmint in a takeoff stock that is very accurate and reliable. It's not the finest rifle there is but it's a solid, accurate gun and I actually really like the x mark pro trigger. I prefer the matte black finish over shiny blue as well. Don't let a silly little problem ruin a great rifle.

Sucks that it happened hope you get it resolved in a timely fashion!

For those who are standing up for Remington, would you want this happening on a once in a lifetime hunting trip or even worse, life and death situation? It's just a poor design in general no matter what brand it is, just Remington was the one foolish enough to implement it.

Do you really think that Remington is the only manufacturer with a separate bolt handle attached to the body?

imagine this were to happen on a Norinco lol oh boy,

Hey guys,

So local GS took the bolt in... he is going to get it back on, then drill and tap 3 screws into it so it doesn't happen again.

The 3 screws are a waste of time. They will fail if it isn't properly silver soldered or welded.

Exactly. Don't let some gun store hack "fix" your bolt. Get it silver soldered and never worry about it again. I would rather pay out of pocket to have this done than let some fool install screws into it. Where do you even put 3-screws? This is retarded and it will look like $hit.

Generic pic. They solder it on, then drill and tap, then shove in in the screws. As mentioned before this was/is still common in some circles in the US. Some folks grind them flush, like threaded studs, others leave heads on them, some buy a bolt made by someone else.

Thanks, answers where the screws are placed. It still looks like $hit though. A properly soldered bolt handle will not fail under all but the most deliberate abuse. The screws would be redundant.

Those screws also weaken the bolt handle. If the silver braze starts to fail at the root, the bolt handle is going to snap right at the first screw.

A bad solution to a problem that didn't exist.
By the time you do all the work of drilling and tapping, your bolt handle is welded on and shooting again.
My local welder now has a TIG machine. I'll be training him to do bolt work. :)

That looks awful :/

Doesn't seem like the smartest move. How much did that cost to get done if you don't mind me asking??

P.s. That picture looks like the bolt is sat on the feed port of a M2 .50cal lol
