Gents: Recommend me a quality "black rifle" in any calibre other than 223 or 308.

CX-4 is not a bad choice.... Stock sights are good, accurate out to 75m, easy to find parts, and well within your budget. I hear some guys can reach out a little farther than 75m with handloads. That would be my choice based on your criteria...

There is NO reason a shoulder fired carbine, with a carbine length barrel (especially in 9mm) should struggle to get past 75m...I can shoot my Mark 23 in .45Auto at 50m at a human sized target and hit it 8-9/10 times, firing a PISTOL, self supported.

Your totally right. I can hit 100 yards with a factory glock gen 4 .40 cal standing off hand. with an 18.5 or bigger barrel, these little carbines will easy be 200 yard plinkers

After all the black rifle intrigue, and after spending several weeks handling, researching, and testing several of your suggestions, ranging in price from $1400 and $4500 (no lie!)... I have come to the stark conclusion that I am not a black rifle kind of guy! :)
The only rifles that sparked my interest, in the end, ironically, were an M1 Garand! and a CX-4 Storm.
I am still looking forward to testing an M4 Tactical shotgun, but that discussion belongs in another forum! :)

An FN PS90 would be a pretty cool gun to own... ~$2200. But looks like you made up your mind!

It won't struggle at all, in fact I have more than a few pistol calibre carbines. For plinking they are fine, but the op also mentioned pest control on the farm. That could be anything from rats to wolves, and my point was that a CX-4 would easily do the job of larger pests out to 75m. I wouldn't want to be the guy who wounded a coyote or wolf by taking a shot at 100-200m, and then hope that it doesn't become someone else's problem.

HK usc might fit the bill, not sure on price ..... I converted mine to NR
Valmet in 7.62x39, will have to shop around to find one in your price range.

The Benelli M2 is more reliable than the M4 under harsh use, contrary to what many youtubers may say, and is one robust shotty if you decide to go that route.

the storm is a great little 9mm and fun for little ones to shoot, if you are into that.

If you can have a smith build you something for 1600-1800 semi have them build you a knock off of the Nemo in 300wm. maybe Have them build 2, as I need one and will buy it off you at $200 over your max of 1800.

May be a bit late to the party with these suggestions. surprised the HK USC wasn't mentioned
