SKS magazine release ... looking for your opinions

Honestly, I do just fine with the OEM mag release. Anything bigger is only going to get hung up on and interfere.

i think the cost is too high for me to ever want to consider that. I wasn't away that it was a problem for some?

i guess in the winter if you are wearing gloves it could be an issue?

The rifle functions fine without an extended mag release, but many of the better and more worthwhile add-ons involve an improvement in ergonomics or other performance ... as to how necessary that is, your mileage may vary.

As regards cost, the other options are a plastic (Tapco) version which is still quite short which I have seen priced locally at $20 and a stainless version from the USA priced at $50 American, and of course, which cannot be shipped here. I expect we will retail this one at $39.95 if at all humanly possible.

I was at the machine shop today and playing around with prototypes confirmed very clearly that steel is the right way to go with this project. As I was slamming the magazine home time after time it occurred to me that steel would endure such treatment much better than aluminum, especially with the option of a nitro carburized surface.

Personally I wouldn't buy either, as I feel it adds no real value to the rifle. I'm not worried about fast mag releases with an sks. If I were to buy one though I wouldn't spend over 30$.

No I'm not cheap, I have plenty of expensive guns. Just don't feel the sks needs upgrading for what it is.

Just make it out of aluminum. It's in such a sheltered area of the rifle, it won't break or get messed up. Does anyone really wanna pay $50 for a little tiny piece of steal? I wouldn't...

If it's aluminum, does that mean it won't be black?

Aluminum would be anodized black as well.

That being said I have decided to go with steel on this run given the fact that the lip of the magazine impacts the magazine latch with some force ... the steel gives one the impression of indestructibility, LOL.

but then you got the guys that say steel is too heavy , just joking the things is you will always find someone that doesn't like a little detail on anything even if it close to the perfection

For the guys who like to run steel AK lookalike magazines, an aluminum mag catch would get chewed up pretty fast.
Plus the extra leverage of an elongated mag release would be prone to deforming the mag catch body where it rides on the steel rails in the trigger group. Steel is just a better choice for function all around

Here is a view of a nitride finished XDMR installed on an SKS rifle. Flash from the photo makes the piece look a bit lighter than real life ... actual colour is a matte black.

sound business decision plus now that I saw what the prototype looks like , its too thin for aluminum .

Because you tie up money in inventory which is essentially the same thing.

Also I get a lower unit cost when I make a larger order of the same item.

Lastly, after playing with both prototypes I am personally convinced that the steel is superior.
