Here is my SKS project, it is a Norinco. I wanted to give it a more AK look, so I went ahead and changed a few things around. I bought all new parts for the project so that I wouldn't hurt any of the original pieces. Although I know a "numbers matching" Norinco SKS isn't that valuable, I wanted to keep it all in tact.
I started by routering the spare stock that I picked up, and mocked up some spare pieces to get an idea of the look I wanted. After that i stripped the finish off the stock and sanded out where i cut off the buttstock. I applied a new stain, however I think I will do some more work to this before I seal it up as the color isn't what I want.
I made up some Aluminum plates to give it a steel receiver look, and popped in some copper rivets for a more appropriate look.
Next I began working on the trigger group. I completely stripped one to the frame and began cutting and welding. After some time looking at it I decided the best option was to scrap the SKS trigger internals and drop in an AR trigger group. It had to be heavily modified to fit in the stripped frame, and I haven't got the Hammer spring figured out yet, it is still to light to set off a primer, but I will continue to work on that.
A piece of Aluminum rod was used to secure the AK74 grip, I used an existing hole and pin in the frame to attach it, and a screw at the grip end.
I still need to come up with an AK mag release and a Safety but I think it has come along quite nicely.
If anyone is thinking about trying this it is a lot of work and a lot of grinding, welding and drilling to get everything to fit.
At this point I am into it for about $400 including the rifle, mags and all the little bits i've used. I know a lot of people disagree with doing this to an sks because "it is not and will never be an AK" but its my rifle and its been a fun project so please just remember that. And as I said I have all the original parts to return it to stock.
