Custom SKS, AK influences.

Here is my SKS project, it is a Norinco. I wanted to give it a more AK look, so I went ahead and changed a few things around. I bought all new parts for the project so that I wouldn't hurt any of the original pieces. Although I know a "numbers matching" Norinco SKS isn't that valuable, I wanted to keep it all in tact.

I started by routering the spare stock that I picked up, and mocked up some spare pieces to get an idea of the look I wanted. After that i stripped the finish off the stock and sanded out where i cut off the buttstock. I applied a new stain, however I think I will do some more work to this before I seal it up as the color isn't what I want.

I made up some Aluminum plates to give it a steel receiver look, and popped in some copper rivets for a more appropriate look.

Next I began working on the trigger group. I completely stripped one to the frame and began cutting and welding. After some time looking at it I decided the best option was to scrap the SKS trigger internals and drop in an AR trigger group. It had to be heavily modified to fit in the stripped frame, and I haven't got the Hammer spring figured out yet, it is still to light to set off a primer, but I will continue to work on that.

A piece of Aluminum rod was used to secure the AK74 grip, I used an existing hole and pin in the frame to attach it, and a screw at the grip end.

I still need to come up with an AK mag release and a Safety but I think it has come along quite nicely.

If anyone is thinking about trying this it is a lot of work and a lot of grinding, welding and drilling to get everything to fit.

At this point I am into it for about $400 including the rifle, mags and all the little bits i've used. I know a lot of people disagree with doing this to an sks because "it is not and will never be an AK" but its my rifle and its been a fun project so please just remember that. And as I said I have all the original parts to return it to stock.

that looks awesome dude, im a little jealous :p hahahaahahah if you're in ONT and i see you at Silverdale, you bet ima ask you to try it out :) awesomeness in your hand brother hahahahaha

The issue with the spring is that it was to wide to fit between the SKS trigger group frame so i had to turn one wrap off of it, and it is now to soft and gives light primer strikes. I tried to use the spring in a different position, but it is still insufficient. I will keep everyone updated on the progress.

Thanks for the interest!

Wonderful job. Disregard and trolls. Your life, live it your way!

Have you thought about cutting the barrel, getting rid of that ugly bayonet and welding a muzzle brake on to keep it within regulation length? Scout mount with a red dot for optics? Now we are talking truly unique project

not sure where you live that you think a welded muzzle brake affects barrel length, this isnt new york

or a red dot making it 'truly unique'

my one concern is when you do finally manage to shoot it, the rivets will break. How did you secure the rivets? Generally the only guns with rivets are machine guns and they sure don't use aluminum pieces with copper rivets.

Ya, do whatever you want................but why make an SKS look like an AK? Have some fun with it and be original. These SKS-AK builds look ridiculous.

I have an AK muzzle brake I bought for it, but Im not sure that I want to cut the barrel down. If I do I will be threading it or buying one of the sights that has AK threads on it. As for the rivets they are just glued in with PL Premium. The stock is still one piece of wood with aluminum plates PLd onto the sides to give it the look of a steel receiver. It may not be strong enough, but if it isn't I will start over making a whole new stock out of steel and the wooden bits left from this.

I dont plan on putting any optics on it, I want to keep the "stock" look.

And saying it looks ridiculous is fine. That's your opinion, I am perfectly fine with that. I enjoy it, people say my car looks ridiculous, and my truck looks ridiculous, why? cause they are different they are "original" they way I like it, but no one else has one like mine. I like having one of a kind things.

it always depend wich way you got , but one thing is sure you have to forget about keeping the sks stock if you want to go that way

depending on how the butt stock is held on to the receiver this thing will smack you in the face. Those rivets will rip out the first shot. I don't recommend you shoot this King of all Bubbas.

Great start! I've put some thought into building a new trigger group and "lower receiver" for a Russian sks to give it more of an AK look. I hope yours turns out great!

Re read what I typed out, the rivets are not holding anything together. the stock is still a complete wooden stock. there is still plenty of material holding the buttstock on.
