finding some love for the little 22's

So I'll start off by saying I wasn't much of a 22lr fan to start of with. The round didn't really meet any of my needs or serve for anything other then cheap plinking. I went strait to the 17hmr for my pest control needs and never really looked back. Im still working on my first bulk box of 22lr from 5yrs ago :)

But lately Ive been toying around with a couple 22lrs that I picked up in trade. Got them so that Id have something easy for the kids to learn with. Rossi youth combo set 22lr/410 single shot and a marlin 795.

Been mostly shooting the rossi with the kids due to it being easier to manage them and the fit is better for them as well. Its wearing an NCstar 4x cheap acog looking thing, but does the trick. Ive only shot maybe 30rnds max through it but I must say I'm surprised at how much its been and how accurate it seems to be so far.

So to cut this short and to keep from ranting on,
Those little 22's can be fun so dont underestimate them

Cheers

I always bring a .22 along when going shooting. It's great for Keeping the fundamentals and they are so much fun! Even the kids rascal I find a pleasure to bang away with. They should definitely be part of everyone's range kit. Now If only we could get a local rim fire ammunition factory close by....

Find myself going back to .22 after many years reloading and shooting larger pistol calibers. Fun and cheap. Gopher season upon us and nothing about .22LR noise irritates most people compared to the larger, nastier stuff. It isn't the most accurate caliber but is decent with the right firearm. I'm happy with 1/2 inch groups at 50. Just pleasant to shoot.

The bulk ammo available today is ####ing abysmal quality. I guess since people are still buying it they keep pumping it out. I was shooting M22, Minimags, and Blazer bulk, shot all over the place out of a target rifle. Switched to RWS and it was night and day...

I love the .22 cheap, fun for almost all ages, and great small game hunting caliber. Not to mention high capacity mags are nicer than always reloading after shooting 5 rounds.

The Olympics are shot with .22's so there must be something there.I had a custom .22 rifle made last year and enjoy it immensely.Shooting quality ammo makes a hugedifference in group size.

I tried the 22, yea I mean like... Eh... The 17HMR though don't get me going I love that round ! lol I think everyone should own a bolt, semi, lever rim fire rifle. Great to teach new comers to the sport and fun to plink with. Mind you even if they only stay out for a hundred rounds cheap way to teach some one the basics and get them comfortable...

I've been a .22 shooter going on about 25 years now, and while I find I don't reach for them as often as I once did...I think they'll always have a place in the collection. I've found this ammo drought we're in to be putting a real damper on my enthusiasm for rimfire though, admittedly. Seems (around here) you're stuck with bulk crap, or top tier stuff when it trickles into dealers. My interests, and budget falls somewhere in between.

However...as time goes on...I flip-flop between a desire to make inexpensive guns shoot well...and a temptation to sell them all and buy a SAKO or Anschutz. Don't see myself adding any rimfires to the (small) collection until I can walk into my local gun shops and see 1/2 decent ammo...at a fair price...sitting on the shelf.

I'd buy RWS in a minute, it seems to shoot well in my pistols as well..

I personally don't know of any ammunition draught hereabouts.

Myself I mostly purchase about twice a year, all my rimfire pistol needs in a one day shopping trip. Three or four annual trips if rifle gopher shooting trips take place in the hotter months.

SK Rifle Match and Winchester Super X Power Points. About 1500-2000 in handguns, and double that with rifles in the summer.

I like .22 so much, I just ordered a .22 adapter for my 12gauge backpacker.

One of the most all around, useful rounds. Varminting, bagging grousse, small game meat hunting (not much to cook on a squirrel if you drill it with .17HMR). Pleasant, easy to shoot. Great accuracy at 50 yards with most any cheap .22 rifle, make that 100 yards with a good rifle. Cheap to shoot. Easy/light to carry a metric crapton of ammo with you when walking around in the field.

There's an "anti - 22" crowd in gun circles. I personally don't get it. Such a versatile little cartridge.

i shot a lot of bulk 22 when my kids were little. the last few years i have rediscoved the 22lr. i only enjoy accurate rifles so bulk ammo is out. i don't mind spending 12 to14 cents a round for sk or other premium ammo. one hole groups at 50 yrds is fun. 100 yrds is still a challange to me but i'm getting better. i spent more for the glass on my cz varmint than i did the rifle.

All the family love 22s...I use them regularly around the farm, and always take to the range for practice during barrel cool down on the center fires. FUN. FUN. FUN

They went with 22lr because it's easier (and cheaper) to build ranges and get competitors... kind of the same reason why we might end-up with only air rifle/pistol events at some future Olympic.

Men's 600 metre free rifle used to be an Olympic event...

Crazyjack, you can up the fun anty for cheap with a Caldwell or other brand flip and and reset rimfire steel target. The kids will LOVE the TINK! and the way the paddles flip up and then reset. The kid's will quickly confirm that it's the best $25 you can spend for anything to shoot at. And I suspect that you'll find it's a lot of fun as well.
