I've been having a blast shooting my SKS and then got bit by the Mosin bug and ended up with 4 of them. I decided to complete the set and get a SVT40.

I'm hoping this will be like shooting a bigger badder SKS. I wanted a decent shooter with a good barrel first and foremost as I plan to run a lot of ammo through this one. I choose a "Hand Select" and I got everything I wanted!!!

After reading about many of the original stocks being cracked or having refurb repairs on SVT's I thought it best to request the heavier duty AVT stock. Again, I plan to run some #'s through this rifle so it made sense. I was pleased with the condition and look. I didn't think of it at the time but the AVT stocks were mostly unused as the AVT40 didn't really see much service time. I've seen many of these where the upper hand guard looks a completely different colour from the stock. For me, I was happy these match so well and had a nice grain.

Now Lever Arms said barrel condition isn't part of the hand select option but they ended up sending me a real nice one anyway!

Decent barrel pics in general are tough for me to take but this looks shiny like my chromed SKS barrel in real life!

I wasn't too huge on the black anodized bolt carrier though. I like the look of the original white. I tried removing the anodizing with acetone with no luck at all. Then I took some sandpaper to it which worked but was slow. Then I remembered a trick I used for aging guitar hardware with muriatic acid.

It worked great!! It was very fast to remove the anodizing and kept the somewhat smooth factory finish on the carrier. I had already messed the finish up a bit with the sandpaper so I had to re polish the entire bolt carrier again. If I had to do it again, I'd just use the acid right off the hop.

Thanks for the replies fellas. When I placed the order with Lever Arms I didn't think to add the tool to the order. The shipping cost makes it just too darn expensive to order all on it's own. I should have got it when the shipping was free with the rifle. My mistake.

DILLIGAF! That's a sweet SVT. Love the original scope and mount. This one I got doesn't have the rails or the notch for the original scope mount. As you can tell, I don't have a problem modifying this one to suit my needs. It's already factory refurb'd and forced matched #'s. I don't use rifles for investment purposes. At least not yet ;)

I may end up scoping this one if I find It's at all accurate. I've read that many of these are not the most accurate rifles but still a blast to shoot. There's a great youtube vid out there of a SVT shooting in super slow motion and you can really see the whole rifle flexes under the pressure of the 54R going off inside. Makes me wonder how any of them end up being accurate.

Unusually good rifling.....at least judging by the pics

Thanks! I thought so too! I was very surprised to get one with shiney bore and solid rifling like this.

When you buy from a dealer you never know what your going to get but in this case I couldn't be happier with the way Lever Arms dealt with me. I changed my hand select options mid way through the order and they still did me a solid.

I actually lucked out with a Mosin that has a barrel in the same condition. I bought that one here on CGN EE. The seller said "perfect barrel" so I took his word for it and bought it. He wasn't lying! Good people here on CGN in the EE.

I oredered mine from Corwin arms christmas select svt's with no stock repairs. got what i asked for. 41 izzy 4 port break. and when i cleaned her out the barrel and all looks great with sharp rifling. I emailed and Martin told me that those rifles came from Polish navy storage which i thought was pretty neat being married to a polish girl :) Nice Svt's guys, if you dont have one yet . get oonnnneeeeeeee :)

Finally broke down and got an SVT from Jean at P&S Guns and Militaria to complete my Russian guns (SKSs and Mosins). Jean at P&S provide good service and would deal with him again. At the same time ordered the gas tool and made my own cross bolt wrench from a 5/16 bolt (my SKS sight adjustment tool did not fit). Removing the extractor to clean it was a PIA. Careful not to lose the tiny extractor spring and plunger as mine shot across the room LOL.

MosinVirus on Youtube has the best video on the COMPLETE disassembly of the SVT-40 I have found.

It took awhile and sweat to get the extractor out, go have a coffee, then go back and try to get it out again, then go have a coffee again. The key is the rear end of the extractor has to be out quite a ways before it literally pops out. I think I fluked out getting the extractor back in. It will be a long time before I try that again.
