I've been having a blast shooting my SKS and then got bit by the Mosin bug and ended up with 4 of them. I decided to complete the set and get a SVT40.
I'm hoping this will be like shooting a bigger badder SKS. I wanted a decent shooter with a good barrel first and foremost as I plan to run a lot of ammo through this one. I choose a "Hand Select" and I got everything I wanted!!!
After reading about many of the original stocks being cracked or having refurb repairs on SVT's I thought it best to request the heavier duty AVT stock. Again, I plan to run some #'s through this rifle so it made sense. I was pleased with the condition and look. I didn't think of it at the time but the AVT stocks were mostly unused as the AVT40 didn't really see much service time. I've seen many of these where the upper hand guard looks a completely different colour from the stock. For me, I was happy these match so well and had a nice grain.
Now Lever Arms said barrel condition isn't part of the hand select option but they ended up sending me a real nice one anyway!
Decent barrel pics in general are tough for me to take but this looks shiny like my chromed SKS barrel in real life!
I wasn't too huge on the black anodized bolt carrier though. I like the look of the original white. I tried removing the anodizing with acetone with no luck at all. Then I took some sandpaper to it which worked but was slow. Then I remembered a trick I used for aging guitar hardware with muriatic acid.
It worked great!! It was very fast to remove the anodizing and kept the somewhat smooth factory finish on the carrier. I had already messed the finish up a bit with the sandpaper so I had to re polish the entire bolt carrier again. If I had to do it again, I'd just use the acid right off the hop.
Now where do I get a gas adjustment tool?
