So my local Canadian tire (Duncanc, B.C.) has a few mosins for $170 I'm thinking of picking one up. Thoughts?

GET ONE. Do a little homework, if you cant get something rare, at least try to get something with an era correct stock whether it be pre, post, or wartime. Check the bore/lands although you wont find anything perfect. Also if possible try to get all matching numbers (even force matched) which most are.

I have three 91/30's and an M38. When are you ever going to get a chunk of history like this for $170? Check bore and muzzle condition, get as many matching numbers on it as you can and try to get the matching bayonet if possible. Grab a big ol' box of cheap ammo and enjoy.

Some have an obscenely difficult trigger pull. It can easily be improved with some thin shimming material and polishing the sear a bit. Check YouTube for a how to.

Agreed. Fun piece of history.
Most bayonets are a very tight fit...they were (apparently) generally left affixed.

I very gently pried mine open just that tiny bit...but even still, I have to use a mallet to fix/remove it.

I have a 1938. I found that out of the batch, it seemed nicer than any from the war years. Some folks think that they may have rushed production a bit in the 1940s...others prefer knowing they have a "war rifle"...

I really like it...and leave the bayo on even at the range!

Maybe if your real nice they will let you pick through the carte , I found a 1925 Hex receiver mixed in with a bunch of round receiver 1940's in the crate at MY CT ,, well the The Hex left with me and my greasy hands lol, was worth the trouble .

yep, found me a hex receiver the same way, buy one they are too cheap and fun to pass up and it wont last forever

Lol I guess I'm borrowing the wife's card and going in on Friday... I don't get paid until next week so.... I've looked them up a bit and an a little concerned about head spacing on them anyway to check that out in the store with no tools?

Yes get it. Be careful though. Those suckers have a way of multiplying. :d

Ain't this the truth! I bought one as my second gun to my SKS, shot it, loved it, and before I knew it, the damned thing breed in my gun safe until there was 4! Finally the SKS must have got in on the action with one of the Mosins because I ended up with a SVT40 in there too. Watch out, it could happen to you.

Lol this will be my 2nd to my SKS too I'd love to be able to afford an svt but a little out of the budget atm

Own 1 Nagant, and 1 unrefurb early 1945 M44,love them both, you can't go wrong for that money and plenty of surplus 7.62x54r around for it to be cheap fun, also makes a good hunting rifle.
I plan on buying another after I buy another SVT40.

I bought one of those fibre optic slip on sights that just slides on top of the front sight post, hoping to try it out this Sunday at the range.

Not really but if they are coming from the Russia or Ukraine in cosmoline there is no need to be concerned. Its the Bubba barrel and receiver swaps that are a risk. If you were buying a surplus rifle that fired a rimless cartridge you wouldn't check head space because there isn't a cheap (coin gauge) way to do it. Find a post where somebody actually had a Mosin that failed "Field". "Slam fires" in SKSs and head space "issues" in Mosins are commercial opportunities.

While I haven't had a slam for in my SKS it's doubled a couple times when it gets hot, how would I know if it's had a receiver swap or fired rimless?

Bought my "birthday Mosin Nagant" from my local CanTire last year !!

It's a nice 1940 round receiver Izhevsk that shoots beautifully.

Almost got a deer with it last autumn but my brother shot first... and missed. LOL

The deer won't be so lucky this year !!!

You know you are going to have to provide pics once you buy the thing right ??
