Air rifle questions

Hey guys,

I live in the Greater Toronto Area, and am on my way to get my PAL/RPAL(just waiting for the test result paper). I recently found an old air rifle I used to play with in my warehouse a few years ago when I had a business, and was wondering what the rules/laws regarding such a thing are. It is a Daisy Red Ryder 4.5mm steel pellets(just read the stock, never knew what it was earlier, lol!), and the name makes me think it is just a toy anyway, but I have a few questions in mind:
1) Are all airguns legal off the shelf? Or do you have to have a PAL?
2) Where can you shoot an air rifle? Do you need to be on a range?
3) Are there any storage & transportation laws for air rifles?

It is obviously pretty cheap to buy and shoot an air rifle for just fun target shooting(cans, etc.), so would be nice if it can be used in a basement or backyard without being sent to jail for 5years.

Thanks in advance for all the good responses!

😊

1) Airguns with a velocity below 500fps can be purchased by anyone 18 or older. They are still considered firearms, but are exempt from some firearms laws. Airguns over 500fps require a PAL to purchase or own. Air pistols over 500fps will require an RPAL and will have all the same limitations and requirements.

2) You can shoot an airgun anywhere you can shoot a firearm legally. If you are considered within town/city limits, then you most likely can't legally shoot them except at a range. A lot of people find 5, 7 or 10 yards/metres available in their home/basement/garage and set up a shooting lane. This is still probably technically illegal, but if the projectiles can't leave your property, you are shooting safely, and nobody can see or hear you, then you likely won't be bothered about it.

3) Legally, below 500fps airguns don't have the same requirements for storage and transportation. Responsibly, you should probably trigger lock them when not in use. A lockable case or cabinet wouldn't be a bad idea, either. Above 500fps, all firearms rules apply.

And be careful with that Red Ryder. You'll shoot your eye out!

Thanks gwilder, do you know if people buy these used? I am thinking I'll just get rid of it and get a nice new 10/22 when my Rpal arrives.
