Thanks, those things are a PAIN to swap out... Not the installation of the new cover that took seconds. Getting the wood cover off took a vice, a hammer, a punch press and two men about 20 minutes to get off... Not joking. Must have heat treated those pins in place.
The more I shoot my SKS, the more I remove things and streamline my shooter rifle.
A simple Chinese rifle in a russian laminate stock with no bayo and just the stock mag. Nice and light.
I'm starting to hate heavy rifles. Especially rifles I shoot hundreds of rounds out of per session.

Ain't that the truth! I think the only thing I might touch on my latest is to add a recoil pad to improve LOP. Apparently communist conscripts were all about a foot shorter than me...
I still keep one in an old ATI folder with a side mount/red dot for packing in the woods. The older stock without the M4 style adjustable butt is a dream to pack around.
Picked it up from an online source, Google ventilated sks hanguard. BE WARNED GETTING THE WOOD HANDGUARD OFF IS A PITA !
Right, I got the 5/30 mag for pics. Changed the hand guard for looks. Love just rocking the sks the way it is.

Its a rivet with a larger diameter head on both sides. Common mistake is thinking its a pin and trying to drive it straight out. Relieve the head on one side and it will tap right through.

I actually like the short lop because it allows my arm to not have to extend so far out to hold the fore stock causing fatigue after an hour or two.
This stock has a thin wrist and just points and shoulders so quick and naturally.
I actually found leaving the cleaning kit inside the buttstock really helps to balance the rifle when the bayo and cleaning rod is removed too. Rifle doesn't nose dive now.
This is how my shooter looks now. Very light, very balanced. Nothing flashy, and abandoning the cool factor here after shooting it in many different configurations.
Just a comfortable, accurate, high round count rifle...

Bought this one some time ago locally for $100. The barrel was chopped at 16.5" at 70° and no crown. The previous owner had also camo painted the stock and added a large black skull to both sides. :
I fixed the muzzle, added a d&t Capco mount holding a Nikon Pro Staff, made a handguard that covers the RSB, a solid ebony cheek riser, and an ebony butt extension.
Due to not having access to the stripper clip guides on the carrier, the fixed 10 rounder was made "drop free" or "detachable" via removal of the retaining collar and spot welding the swing portion of the mag in place. Topped it off with my custom made Talon extended mag release and the system works great.

So its the 5/30 duck bill. There was no modification needed at all. It was plug and play. I forget the brand. The SKS is just a regular Russian refurb.
Ive tried the TAPCO mags before in other SKS's (in original wood stock, in tapco stock, in archangel stock) and almost always the crapco plastic mags need modification or filing some where to run/fit right. After 5 SKS's trying almost all available after market parts. I have come to realize that you should just leave it as is unless you want headaches. Always something needing to be tinkered with. Never any actual improvements. I got bored one day and decided to do this to the sks, the hand guard cover took a bit more to do then I would have liked but that's fine, the mag was going to be for pictures only because I expected to have to #### with it to make it fit but there was no issues with mine and it actually runs fine surprisingly. Out of all my SKS's other then the one in in original version this one is the most reliable and cool looking I think.
