I'm searching for my first hand gun and I want something that makes the best of our ridiculous regulations. I would like it to be as compact as is allowed yet still be comfortable. It should have 10 round factory unpinned magazines and a 106mm barrel. Ammo and magazines should be common and affordable. The gun itself should be affordable, say <$800 CAD.

Is there a gun out there that fits this description? Most modern hand guns seem to have normal capacity magazines pinned to 10 rounds and are needlessly bulky and heavy. What's the best hand gun for Canadians? I'd prefer something smaller than .45 ACP, such as .380, .40 S&W or 9mm, but .45 ACP is okay if it's the only one that fits the bill.

I can't seem to find anything that ticks all the boxes. The closest seems to be a Glock 26 with the barrel sticking out the end of the slide. It doesn't look too attractive or comfortable.

So, what would you suggest?

First handgun...... I wouldn't go compact... cz75 sp01 would be good to learn on. 9mm would be my preference since you will be shooting a lot and it's the most affordable without being a .22 also the metal frame is nice

I think you are putting too much emphasis on mag capacity and that it has to be unpinned. Lots of compact double stack 9mms would fit the bill but have pinned mags. Unless you are competing or something, why do you need 10 rounds as there are some great compact single stacks

that said, the Walther p99 in 40 hit close to your target as the mag is hardly pinned (unpinned capacity is 11)

go with a Sig P225, it holds 8.

honestly buy what you want. no one in gov is going to care that your holding your nose at them.

"Take that Gov!! I shall abide by your rules of 10 rounds!!'

I am interested in joining the shooting club here and I may end up competing with it. The Walther does look about right, thanks for the suggestion. I'm open to other suggestions too, what are some of these single stacks you're referring to?

I don't care about that, I just want to be practical within the law. If we can only have 10 rounds and are limited to 106mm barrels, which gun makes the best of this bad situation?

Interammo Makarov. To answer your question, rather than to tell you what you should want.

By all means, tell me what I should want! That Makarov looks perfect though, thanks!

all pistols make the best of this "bad situation".

go try out the handguns at a store to get a feel for what you like. buy what you like.

If you can find a HK P7m10 bnib it would fit all those criteria, unfortunately it will set you back like 4 grand

Sig 239/229 (out of price range) or SP2022 in 9mm (106mm barrel, 10rd mags, $579) sound perfect for you. If you go too small, the recoil goes up.

The pinned 10/15 vs a 10rd mag really is a non-issue. Unsure why it is for you.

Whatever you do, don't buy a SD9 VE, awful gun, terrible trigger, very light therefore excessive recoil.

straight answer to OP's question, not getting into which is good or bad. IRUNGUN used to sell the M&P 9c with storm lake barrel which fits meets all your requirements. ask steve if they still have it as I don't see it on the site anymore.
