Anyone buy a handgun at Phoenix Gun Shop in Edmonton?

I've been there a couple times with a friend who shoots there, and have purchased some pistols/rifles from there. He really likes them, but I have no purchase experience with them. My money tends to go to P&D and Cabelas (true, a lot of Cabelas staff arn't up on gun stuff, but if you know exactly what you want your pretty good, and couldn't really argue with the decent price I got on a new P226).

Just picked up a pistol from them. Checked the local shops and they were the cheapest. Also check out tier one...small store but lits of hard to find stuff and good prices.

Milarm is my choice, prices are decent. You can negotiate with them too. If they don't have it, they can get it quick.

Ive been a full member there, purchased a firearm there and shot there as a chas member. I don't mind it. It's neither amazing nor bad. In an age when shooting is a nanny state rich man sport, it's hard to put down an honest company. They know the market enough to stay afloat. That being said, I also enjoy milarms and pnd. No problems with either of those sellers. Wholesale has given me a few good deals.

The only seller Ive ever had serious problem in Edmonton is Cabelas. They screwed me over pretty hard. I don't bother with them at all.

my 2 cents.

When buying a gun at range shop like Phoenix have you tried to negotiate a break on the range membership?
Point out the price the competition is asking for the same gun , which must be in stock at both stores to be meaningful for true negotiations. Ask for the price difference to be applied to your range membership. You may be presently surprised with their response.

Ive been meaning to give them another chance but I cant bring myself to do it, people that like em seem to really like them.

I just like stores that are willing to negotiate.

I find Milarm and Wildwest accommodating, this is not just when I make a 1 gun purchase, last summer I purchased a few at one time a Milarm, and paid cash, Gord was quite accommodating. Flora at wild west is too when you flash cash.

P&D lost a few sales from me in the past because they wouldn't budge an inch. Scary thing is I had a salesperson tell me a Norinco 1911 was just as good as a Colt, and tried to point me in that direction.

Indoor ranges in Edmonton have never been decent, not enough ventilation, or too expensive for what they offer. Yes granted we live 6months a year in the snow, but I like to keep my brass when I shoot.

Pheonix rocks. They have great prices on some guns and others are more than average. Get a membership and they discount the guns even more.

Any of the stand alone shops are at a disadvantage when compared to the big box stores. Milarm, P&d, Pheonix, etc. are gun shops. They don't buy firearms to stock a network of stores. They also don't sell hiking, camping, fishing, bedding, dishes, and on and on to off set tight pricing on firearms.
Want these shops around in the future? Support them. If you can't stomach the price on a firearm, shop around, but at the very least give them first crack at your business. This is not popularity contest you don't have to like the sales people. You should do your research before hand and know more then the sales staff. Just stand and smile as they tell you how smart they are, then leave.

You don't get personal service with the big box stores, the LGS are always more knowledgeable (unless you get the odd salesperson blowing it out of their butt). Most will negotiate for the sale.

Heh, Just ask for Gord at Millarm, and flash a wad of bills. He's like a seagull looking at something shiny. J/K Gord. As with all stores, they have bills to pay, and are in it to make money in the long run. If they aren't, they are called non-profit charities, or worst, CLOSED.

Most big box stores are good for first time buyers, they aren't looking for the return customer. Support you LGS.

Was planning on maybe buying a handgun at their shop since I just received my RPAL and got signed up for a membership. How was the experience if you bought from there? Was going to get a SIG 226 in .22 but are over a $100 more than Cabelas so I may be getting it there. Been eyeing a CZ Shadow in 9mm as well. No one else seems to have it in stock in the city at the moment.
Don't really want to wait longer than I have to. :dancingbanana:

The people behind the counter at Phoenix actually own guns themselves, and are enthusiasts.
Like someone else is this thread said, you have to do your own research. The nice thing about Phoenix is that if they have the same or similar model as a range gun you can try it out.

I'm a member so I get a discount there. Depends on what you want, I find them cheaper for some things than other places in town. I like the guys behind the counter, never too pushy.

Thats what I did......was willing to give them a sale first as I was a member of their club. Just the response and attitude I received turned me off. I am supporting them.....Have gone there before joining their club and had fun. They're not perfect but am grateful that I have a place to go and shoot when I want to. Just not keen on purchasing a gun there at the moment. Maybe in the future I may change my mind. Range officers there in my experience are great.
Until then I'll just be content using my SIG there and my soon to receive CZ Shadow.

I've bought a few guns in there and they are a straight up bunch. I shoot there too. I once bought a Marlin Guide Gun that jammed with a live shell in it on the first magful. There was a burr that hadn't been machined out and the gun was locked up after only two shots through it. (This was years ago and I am told that Marlin was having QA/QC issues back then). The owner - I think his name is Len - didn't even blink. He checked it out, took the gun back on the spot, gave me a brand new one (and he double checked it to make sure there were no rude surprises) - and we went on our way.

Fact is they are the BEST guys to buy from in Edmonton, IMHO. I might be dropping by for a new 1911...

its good that you had a good experience with them.
i had nothing but a horror show and i have yet to meet anyone in person who would recommend them.

i usually like to let people make up their own minds about stores and people in this industry but sometimes you just have to warn people.
dont just walk away from these guys.... run.
you can thank me later.

Why, that doesn't sound right to me, Wayup. What happened?

I know how it is, I get along with almost all the suppliers here except one and I won't deal with those pikers on ANYTHING. (The feeling is mutual on that one, if I showed my face around Marstar I would probably be given the bum's rush straight out the front door! LOL LOL LOL!) Yet everyone else on the forum uses them and think they're great. You are probably right though...everyone is different and they interact in different ways so trust your gut! There's lots of good suppliers and most of 'em are right here on the Gunnutz.
